Pace bowler Kyle Jarvis is leaving Lancashire before the end of his current deal to resume his international career with Zimbabwe.Jarvis’ return will be the completion of work started by Zimbabwe’s convener of selectors Tatenda Taibu, to bring prominent internationals who chose to further their career elsewhere home. Last week, Brendan Taylor left Nottinghamshire in order to return to Zimbabwe, where he was immediately re-signed on a national deal. Taylor is expected to make his comeback in the two Test series against West Indies in October, two-and-a-half years after he signed a Kolpak deal at the end of the 2015 World Cup.Jarvis’s absence has been much longer. He left for Lancashire in 2013, just two years after making his debut. At the time, Zimbabwe Cricket was experiencing one of its myriad financial crisis and players had not been paid. Jarvis sought a county deal in the hope of financial security and established himself as one of the club’s most valuable players. Zimbabwe would say the same.Though they have had several bowlers come through, injuries to Tinashe Panyangara, Tendai Chatara, Brian Vitori and Chris Mpofu over the years have meant they have been unable to establish a regular opening pair. With Zimbabwe set to play more matches, especially Test matches, and the World Cup qualifiers ahead of them, Jarvis will be seen as someone who can fill that role.”I have absolutely loved my time at Lancashire over the last four years,” Jarvis said. “It’s a very special place and I have made some fantastic friends here. I am immensely proud to have played a part in the history of this great club. I would like to thank everyone that for making me feel part of it.”In eight Test, Jarvis has taken 30 wickets at 31.73 alongside 27 at 45.22 in ODIs and 10 wickets in nine T20Is.

Newcastle: Ashworth Could Land Dream Schar Upgrade In £40m "Leader"

Newcastle United are interested in signing Joachim Andersen from Crystal Palace this summer and have now received a boost in their pursuit, if reports are to believed.

What's the latest on Joachim Andersen to Newcastle?

That's according to FootballTransfers, who claim that the Eagles might be willing to reduce their initial £40m asking price for the Danish defender with the south London club in pursuit of reinforcements themselves.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that United have been in constant discussion with the 27-year-old's agents and have made it be known that he is a player they have appreciated for a long time.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

FootballTransfers also reported Newcastle's initial interest back in June, and technical director Dan Ashworth now needs to decide whether a deal is feasible given the club's outlay already this summer.

How good is Joachim Andersen?

The 2023/24 Premier League campaign is but a whisker away, with the 20 teams at contrasting stages of their summer transfer business.

Eddie Howe will be one of the more satisfied bosses, having bolstered the first-team ranks with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento after finishing fourth last season and qualifying for the Champions League.

St. James' Park is headed for further success this season, subjectively of course, and while Howe's transfer appetite is largely sated, there is room for a ball-playing centre-half such as Andersen, who could replace Fabian Schar.

Schar was pivotal to the Magpies' impressive season and started 36 matches in the English top-flight, earning an average Sofascore rating of 7.13, completing 78% of his passes, averaging a key pass every two matches, keeping 12 clean sheets, making 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 tackles and 3.8 clearances per game and succeeding with 65% of his total duels.

Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar.

He was hailed for being "important at both ends" by analyst Statman Dave and this is evidenced through his FBref statistics, where the Swiss ranks among the top 5% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for total shots taken and the top 10% for aerials won per 90.

However, the £40k-per-week titan is out of contract at the end of the season and at 31 years of age, Newcastle might feel that it is time to sign a replacement.

Andersen could be the "leader" – as he was described by his former coach Svend Graversen – to bolster the squad as they look to cement their newfound stature among Europe's elite, with full belief in the transfer of his skills to Tyneside.

The Eagles colossus recorded an average rating of 6.96 last term, completing 80% of his passes, averaging 0.4 key passes per game, making 1.3 tackles and a whopping 5.8 clearances per match and winning 64% of his total duels.

Meanwhile, the 22-cap international also ranks among the top 16% of positional peers for total shots, the top 2% for clearances and the top 17% for aerials won per 90.

By joining the fold at Newcastle, Andersen's performances would only improve and if Ashworth can indeed strike an astute deal for the £80k-per-week gem, Schar's possible departure could leave not so much as a bent in the St. James' Park armour.

Mark Taylor to be re-elected to CA board

The former Australia captain is one of two directors up for re-election at the AGM next week, which will be preceded by meetings of state chief executives and chairmen, and also a CA board meeting

Mark Taylor, the former Australia captain, is set to be re-elected to the board of Cricket Australia for another three years when the governing body meets for its annual general meeting in Brisbane next week.Alongside Tony Harrison, Taylor is one of two directors up for re-election at the AGM, which will be preceded by meetings of state chief executives and chairmen, and also a CA Board meeting. There has been discussion, too, about elevating the CA chief executive, James Sutherland, to a formal seat at the board table as executive director, a move recommended by the David Crawford and Colin Carter governance review of CA in 2011 but blocked by the Board at the time. Some uncertainty had surrounded Taylor’s future, after he hinted earlier this year that he may well move on from the directorship he has held for 12 years, apart from a brief period in which he resigned while the board moved from 14 state delegates to nine independent directors.”At this stage I’m forging ahead as a board director and a commentator,” Taylor told the in February. “But that could all change for me in the next 13 months. I could no longer be a director and could not be a cricket commentator by this time next year so if that was to happen, I’m going into it eyes wide open and ready to make some decisions about where I might want to go.”However in the wake of this year’s pay dispute between CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association, both the state associations and the board chairman David Peever are believed to have encouraged Taylor to stay on, as one of the most highly regarded directors on the board and also a provider of much cricket credibility to decision-making. Under CA’s constitution, at least one director must be based in each of the six states, with Taylor filling the New South Wales slot.Since 2012 the board has been bolstered with plenty of corporate acumen. But the need for a balanced array of perspectives and backgrounds was underlined by the way the dispute unfolded, with the players firmly rejecting CA’s desire to break up the fixed revenue percentage model at the heart of all MoU agreements since 1998 despite being pushed out of contract by the June 30 expiry of the previous deal. CA has conducted an internal review of the MoU process, results of which are expected to be tabled at the board meeting before the AGM.Greg Dyer, the president of the ACA, wrote in the annual report of the players’ association this week that both parties needed to work alongside one another to ensure a similarly damaging dispute is not allowed to happen again. “Throughout, the players and the ACA held true to the principle that the players need to be real partners in the game, rather than mere employees, and the final result was a strong affirmation of that principle,” he wrote.”All involved from the ACA and all of our players are to be congratulated on a great outcome for cricket. But we must never allow such a process to happen again. At the ACA, we commit to a full review of the MoU process to determine how all this was allowed to occur and how it may be avoided for all future negotiations.”Further, it is my intention as president of the ACA to continue to ask the questions that challenge the sport to keep getting better. Whether on the field or off, the ACA stands committed to playing an active role in seeking improvement and reform where needed. I assume a similar review process is underway at CA, which should include consideration of the behavior and tactics employed by those involved, both collectively and individually.”Australia’s vice-captain David Warner, the most outspoken of cricketers during the standoff, said this week that the players had never sought to get into a conflict with CA, but felt compelled to stand their ground. “We regret the way it was played out in the media,” Warner told the . “But we didn’t ask for a fight. We just stood up for what we believed in. That was a revenue-share model.”We hope it never ever gets to that again. We’ve got another five years to deal with it now moving forward. We came to an agreement and both parties are satisfied now. We’ve moved on and we’re trying to concentrate on cricket and the Ashes. You saw the stance that the players had on it. We weren’t going to go on tour. At the end of the day, they came to an agreement and we ended up touring Bangladesh. But we were standing firm and strong and we believed in what we thought was right.”CA is expected to announce a modest financial profit for 2016-17, a season in which Australia hosted South Africa and Pakistan. However, the chairman Peever and chief executive Sutherland can be expected to highlight major progress at international level this year, in helping to drive constitutional reform at the ICC and more recently usher the introduction of a Test Championship and ODI league to add context to the game.

Sky Sports: Man City Eyeing "Incredible" New 25 y/o Attacker

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing a move to sign RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo, with Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio sharing if the Bundesliga side would be willing to sell the attacker.

What’s the latest Man City transfer news?

The treble winners and Pep Guardiola have been fairly busy so far this summer with moves for Croatia internationals Mateo Kovacic and defender Josko Gvardiol from Chelsea and RB Leipzig.

Meanwhile, the club have lost Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan, and it looks as if attacking reinforcements are on the agenda before the September 1 deadline, especially with Kevin de Bruyne potentially out for four months with a hamstring issue.

City are thought to be preparing an offer to sign Rennes’ Jeremy Doku to fill the void left by Mahrez and have now agreed on personal terms with the Belgian.

In attacking midfield, West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta has been the player heavily linked with a move to Manchester, but it looks as if Olmo is another player of interest.

Di Marzio took to X in the last 48 hours to provide an update on Man City and Olmo, claiming that the new Super Cup winners are “monitoring” the Spaniard.

However, the Sky Sports reporter added that RB Leipzig are not willing to sell the player at this moment in time and are expected to ask for a very high fee.

“Man City are monitoring Dani Olmo closely. RB Leipzig not willing to sell him – it's expected the German side will ask for a very high fee. Guardiola appreciates Olmo.”

dani-olmo-liverpool-philippe-coutinho-transfer-opinion-premier-league

Who is Dani Olmo?

Olmo is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also turn out on either wing if required, so could fit into Guardiola’s versatile attacking system relatively easily.

The 25-year-old has been with RB Leipzig since 2020 after leaving Dinamo Zagreb, with Guardiola hailing the player back in 2019 following a Champions League encounter against City.

"He's a top player – he has a bright future, of course. His performance today shows it. About the transfer and the money he deserves, that is not the point.

"The point is he is an incredible player and I am pretty sure he is able to play in the strong leagues in Europe. Hopefully if Dinamo wants and he wants, it can happen."

In Germany, Olmo appears to be going from strength to strength and recently scored a hat-trick in the DFL Supercup against Bayern Munich. Olmo has contributed to 53 goals in 124 games for RB Leipzig and has been compared to Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Tottenham’s James Maddison and Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, as per FBref.

Over the past 12 months, Olmo has ranked highly compared to attacking midfielders and wingers for shots, successful take-ons, while he ranks in the top 1% of his positional peers for through balls.

A move could be one to keep an eye on, but with RB Leipzig not willing to sell, City may have to make an eye-catching offer to tempt the German side into talking after landing Gvardiol following extensive negotiations from the same club.

Centuries for Mathews and Chandimal but India still on top

Having kept it locked up all through this tour, Sri Lanka finally reminded everyone of the batting quality they possess, as centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and, at long last, Angelo Mathews helped them avoid the follow-on at the Feroz Shah Kotla

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy04-Dec-20171:58

Chopra: ‘India’s slip cordon becoming a game of musical chairs’

Having kept it locked up all through this tour, Sri Lanka finally reminded everyone of the batting quality they possess, as centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and, at long last, Angelo Mathews helped them avoid the follow-on at the Feroz Shah Kotla.Given how long they were kept on the field, India would probably not have enforced the follow-on anyway. The Chandimal-Mathews partnership alone consumed 79.1 overs. And yet, once they found a way past that stand – having missed numerous opportunities to do so previously – India reasserted their dominance. R Ashwin, underbowled for most of the innings, led the way, taking three wickets on a pitch that only gave the spinners modest assistance, and the other three bowlers made valuable incisions too. Wriddhiman Saha, on a day when India’s catchers kept letting down their bowlers, made three quality grabs behind the wicket.Having got through the first session wicketless, and nearly doing so again in the second, Sri Lanka lost wickets in a clump, sliding from 317 for 5 and ending the day at 356 for 9, with Chandimal still at the crease on an outstanding unbeaten 147.Right since his belated introduction on the second afternoon – he only came on in the 28th over – Ashwin had worried Mathews with his round-the-wicket angle, getting the ball to dip and land on an awkward length that made it difficult to deal with his natural variation. Some balls turned in, others carried on with the angle. The dismissal arrived courtesy the one that kept going across Mathews, who sent a thin edge through to Saha, who made a difficult chance look easy.It was a moment of joy for Ashwin, and perhaps one of vindication too, for this was only his 19th over of the innings. Ravindra Jadeja, at that point, had bowled 34, Ishant Sharma 23, and Mohammed Shami 22. Perhaps the presence of two right-hand batsmen at the crease for such a long period had made Virat Kohli reluctant to turn to his offspinner, but again he had shown his ability to threaten both edges of the bat.As always, Ashwin began finding more bite after getting a few overs under his belt and working out what pace to bowl at, with what trajectory. On this Kotla pitch, he began delivering his offbreaks with far more overspin than sidespin. This overspin, which led to dip and bounce, sent Roshen Silva on his way for a duck on debut, caught bat-pad. Two wickets, two right-handers. The next one was a left-hander, Niroshan Dickwella, who lost his off stump while trying to cut Ashwin’s round-the-wicket arm ball.BCCI

Chandimal added a brisk 61 with Sadeera Samarawickrama, who came out at No. 6, having been off the field since being hit on the helmet at short leg on day one. Having hit seven fours in an attractive 33, however, Samarawickrama edged Ishant while chasing at a widish ball, and Saha dived to his right to take a spectacular low one-hander. A little later, another dive to his right sent back Suranga Lakmal, who edged an away-seamer from Shami.Jadeja grabbed the ninth wicket, typically an lbw as the batsman, Lahiru Gamage, propped forward and played for non-existent turn.Given how quickly the lower middle order disintegrated, India may have wondered what the match situation might have been had they held on to all their chances. In all, they let Mathews off three times. Virat Kohli had shelled him on 6 on the second day, at second slip, and Rohit Sharma repeated the trick when he was on 98: at the same position, off the same bowler, Ishant, when Mathews made a similar mistake, poking away from his body without moving his feet. This was a straightforward chance, at chest height, when India had just taken the second new ball. Then, on 104, Mathews looked to hit Jadeja over mid-off, but didn’t get the elevation he desired. Vijay Shankar, substituting for M Vijay, timed his jump well and got his fingers to the ball at full stretch, but failed to hold on.It was that kind of innings for Mathews, an innings defined by struggle. In the first hour, he was beaten more than once by Shami, who bowled a spell of testing line, the odd bouncer, and just a touch of seam movement, all at high pace. Camped on the back foot against Ishant Sharma, he reached out for full balls and skewed and sliced them squarer than intended. As the session wore on, Ishant packed the leg side and peppered him with short balls. Perhaps he overdid it, but there were still a few awkward moments, such as a pull that flashed narrowly wide of the man at short fine leg.But Mathews grew in assurance thereafter, utilising all his know-how to keep India’s bowlers out, but it was seldom pretty. He was quick to punish anything on his legs, and targeted Ashwin for his rare flashes of adventure, such as a delicate lap-sweep to go from 83 to 87. Otherwise, it was sheer, stubborn resistance.Like Mathews, Chandimal was troubled by Shami early on. A short ball from wide of the crease smacked him on the glove, and three balls later he was a little slow getting on the front foot to a full ball in the channel, the resultant edge falling short of first slip. At one point, the smoggy atmosphere caused him some difficulty too, bringing the physio onto the field. Otherwise, he looked composed as he settled into the kind of defensive innings he has now become adept at playing – think SSC, 2016, or Abu Dhabi, a couple of months ago.Occasionally, he unfurled an eye-catching attacking shot – such as a cover drive off Shami or a twinkle-toed whip against the turn off Jadeja – but otherwise it was all vigilant defence as he moved to his third successive half-century of the series, looking increasingly secure. After lunch, he picked up his scoring too, as the bowlers’ workloads began occasionally to tell on their accuracy. Ishant dropped short a couple of times, and Chandimal put him away to the point and fine leg boundaries, but the shot of his innings, Sri Lanka’s innings, and perhaps even the match, came off Shami. It wasn’t a bad ball, banged in close to off stump, extracting a good amount of bounce, but Chandimal, feet off the ground, got off his feet and punched it to the cover boundary.
