Isam: New Zealand are under fire

Rain brought day two to an early end after three wickets in two overs from Shakib Al Hasan had left the second Test delicately poised. Replying to Bangladesh’s 289, New Zealand had slid from 252 for 4 to 260 for 7 when bad weather arrived some 20 minutes from scheduled close of play, ending a seesawing day in which New Zealand had routinely held the upper hand only for quick losses of wickets to stall their progress.Taylor climbs up the table

3 New Zealand batsmen with 6000 or more Test runs. Ross Taylor got there in this match and only Stephen Fleming (7172) and Brendon McCullum (6453) sit above him on the list.

6 Fifty-plus scores for Tom Latham in his last seven Tests. No other New Zealand player has made more than four such scores in the same number of successive matches.

3/32 Shakib Al Hasan’s figures, his best across four Tests in New Zealand. This was his maiden three-wicket haul in the country, having picked up only five wickets in previous matches. All three wickets came in the space of nine balls after he was used for only four overs in the first 66 of the innings.

2 Fifties for Henry Nicholls in this series; equaling the number of fifties he had made in nine Tests and 14 innings previously.

First, New Zealand had capitalised on two dropped catches and moved to 46 for 0 before Kamrul Islam Rabbi pegged them back with two wickets in three balls. Then a 106-run third-wicket partnership between Tom Latham and Ross Taylor, which rattled along at 4.41 per over, put Bangladesh on the back foot only for both to fall, against the run of play, in the space of 8.5 overs. Shakib’s triple-strike came after another meaty partnership – 75 for the fifth wicket between Henry Nicholls and Mitchell Santner. Nicholls was batting on 56 at stumps, with New Zealand seven down and trailing by 29 runs.Shakib, Bangladesh’s most experienced bowler, had only been used for four overs when he came back into the attack to start the 67th of New Zealand’s innings. His under-utilisation may have had something to do with the fact that left-handers comprised four of New Zealand’s top six, but if that was the case, it reflected one-track thinking from their captain Tamim Iqbal, for within four balls of his new spell, Shakib dismissed a stodgy left-hander.Playing for turn, Santner went on the back foot to work Shakib, bowling from left-arm over, into the leg side. The lack of turn, however, left him in a fully open position and he ended up playing across the line and missing by a long way. The ball hit his back pad in front of middle stump. Reviewing Paul Reiffel’s out decision, Santner had to walk back without technology either upholding or rejecting it, as ball-tracking failed to materialise. Umpire’s call seemed the likely outcome, with the ball looking like it may have gone on to clip leg stump. New Zealand got their review back, but not their No. 6.Bowling with a low arm from around the wicket and getting the ball to skid on towards the stumps, Shakib gobbled up BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme in his next over. Both played for the turn, and both were bowled playing unneccessarily aggressive shots. Watling chopped on an attempted cut, de Grandhomme played a loose drive, leaving a massive gap for the ball to sneak through.If the scorecard at stumps was an indictment of New Zealand’s batsmen for frittering away their starts, it also flattered Bangladesh’s bowlers, who were frustratingly inconsistent for most of the day. They began excellently in the first session, lost their discipline in the second, and seemed to be letting the game drift in the third before Shakib intervened.Shakib Al Hasan removed Colin de Grandhomme for a three-ball duck•Getty Images

Taskin Ahmed, though, was excellent with the new ball, beating the outside edge four times in his first three overs, and finding Jeet Raval’s edge in his sixth, only for Sabbir Rahman, moving to his right from second slip, to grass a knee-high catch. Taskin troubled the two left-handed openers so frequently because of his line, which didn’t allow the comfortable leave despite his angle across them, his length, which was usually on the fuller side of good, and every now and again a bit of seam movement towards the slips. He did overpitch on a few occasions – Latham in particular capitalised with three splendid, full-faced drives to the straight boundary – but that did not cause him to pull his length back at any point.Mehedi Hasan opened the bowling with Taskin, extracted bounce, and created a chance in his first over, provoking a drive away from the body from Raval that resulted in a low chance that Mahmudullah, rising too quickly at second slip, shelled. Raval didn’t do much with his two lives. The opening partnership had stretched to 46 before Kamrul, coming on as second change, broke through in the 15th over, his first. Trying to pull one that was perhaps not short enough, Raval was cramped for room and only managed a bottom-edge onto the stumps.Two balls later, New Zealand were two down. Kane Williamson may be among the hardest players in the world to dismiss, but even he could do little when confronted with the perfect late outswinger – full enough to draw him forward but not so full that he could get close to the pitch of it, its initial line close enough to off stump to force him to play, and its movement late enough to prevent him from adjusting and withdrawing his bat. Wicketkeeper Nurul Islam tumbled to his right to take his first catch in Test cricket.Latham batted serenely through the first session, never following the ball with his hands even when he was beaten, and had only one real moment of discomfort, when the slingy Rubel Hossain bowled a bouncer that didn’t rise as much as expected. Latham was unable to sway away in time, and the ball crunched into his helmet grille and sent the protective attachment at the back of his neck flying.By lunch, Latham and Taylor had added 23, and had seen out some tight bowling from Bangladesh’s quicks. Their discipline suffered after the break, though, and boundary balls grew frequent. Taylor, who has looked in excellent touch since the series against Pakistan – thanks in part to adopting a consciously side-on approach, with front shoulder pointing down the pitch rather than opening out to mid-on – drove fluently through the covers in addition to showing off his usual strengths of cutting and working the ball off his legs.The first 13 overs of the post-lunch session brought 83 runs at 6.38, including nine fours and two sixes, and New Zealand seemed to be running away with the game, when Bangladesh profited from a loss of concentration from Latham on 68. Looking to cut one that wasn’t quite wide enough for the shot, he top-edged Taskin in the first over after drinks.Taylor could have followed him seven overs later, when he misread the flight of an offbreak from Mehedi and whipped it in the air to deep square leg, only for Kamrul, diving forward, to drop the low chance. He was on 75 at that point, had already brought up one landmark – becoming the third New Zealander to pass 6000 Test runs – and seemed set to bring up another and equal the late Martin Crowe, his mentor, on 17 Test hundreds. But that wasn’t to be; he had added only two runs to his score when he drove too early at Mehedi in his next over and spooned a catch to short midwicket.

Farke Could Find His Next Isak At Leeds In £20k-p/w ‘Rocket’

One of the most challenging situations of the summer transfer window at Leeds United will be convincing touted forward Wilfried Gnonto to remain at Elland Road following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

The Championship side are expected to lose a wealth of players after plummeting from the top flight, but a sure-fire way to ensure that a title challenge is mounted would be retaining the Italy international's services.

And while the Whites are managerless at present after dismissing both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia this term before making a short-term swoop for the stoic Sam Allardyce in the closing weeks of the campaign, a shrewd appointment for a Championship specialist might just be forthcoming.

Indeed, according to the Daily Mail, Farke has emerged as the leading candidate for the managerial role in West Yorkshire after being dismissed from German Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach several weeks ago.

Scott Parker and Patrick Vieira have also both been placed on the short-list, but given Farke's experience in forging two promotion-winning campaigns from the second tier with Norwich City, he could be the man for the job.

How would Gnonto perform under Daniel Farke?

The 46-year-old boss has led 138 matches in the second tier, winning 71 matches and amassing 182 points at a rate of 1.82 points per match.

The prospective appointment will be tethered to concerns over his suitability in the Premier League – should Leeds succeed in their seasonal endeavour at the first time of asking – given that Farke boasts a miserable 0.53 PPM in the English top-flight, with just six victories from 49 outings.

But that is largely down to Norwich's mediocrity at the highest level, candidly – the Canaries have suffered relegation across all four of their previous Premier League campaigns.

An offence-minded, gegenpressing coach, Farke's attractive philosophy would suit Leeds to a tee and is exactly what the squad, and indeed fanbase, needs to spark some optimism after a dismal year, and such a style could prompt touted talent Gnonto to stay.

daniel-farke-norwich-leeds-united-manager-live-updates-gossip-marcelo-bielsa-49ers

The 19-year-old "diamond" – as he has been called by talent scout Antonio Mango – impressed for the Whites last term and posted four goals and assists apiece from his dynamic role on the left flank, with his exploits earning him a regular role in Italy's international set-up, where he has earned ten caps and scored one goal.

Farke has a history of managing prosperous forwards, salient names being Marcus Thuram, Teemu Pukki and Alexander Isak, and with the likes of Everton interested in making a move for Gnonto this summer, Farke will be determined to keep hold of his £20k-per-week man and ensure that his past management of Isak does not repeat itself.

Indeed, Newcastle United's club-record £63m striker played just one solitary match under Farke's stewardship at Borussia Dortmund II, and Farke will want to ensure that another "special" – as Gnonto was praised by Michael Skubala – prospect is not whisked away from him early on once again.

Especially considering the 23-year-old has just plundered ten goals and two assists from just 17 Premier League starts during an injury-stricken campaign.

Praised as a "pocket rocket" by pundit Tam McManus, Gnonto could use the forthcoming campaign at Elland Road as a chance to develop his skills and star for the creme-de-la-creme of the Championship, spearheading a charge back to Premier League competition and unleashing his refined skills at the highest level once again.

COA asks states to submit compliance report by March 1

The Committee of Administrators has specified that an office-bearer who has completed nine years in a post either at the BCCI or a state association is ineligible to hold any post thereafter

Nagraj Gollapudi24-Feb-2017

The Committee of Administrators has decided to stick to the Lodha Committee’s interpretation of a cumulative tenure until a new directive from the Supreme Court•AFP

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators has specified that an office-bearer who has completed nine years in a post either at the BCCI or at a state association will become ineligible to hold any official post thereafter.The COA’s criteria which disqualifies individuals as office-bearers

Is not a citizen of India;

Has attained the age of 70 years;

Is declared to be insolvent, or of unsound mind;

Is a Minister or Government Servant;

Holds any office or post in a sports or athletic association or federation apart from cricket;

Has been an Office Bearer of the BCCI for a total period of 9 years;

Has been an Office Bearer of the state association for a total period of 9 years;

Has been charged by a Court of law for having committed any criminal offence

This directive was part of an e-mail sent to state associations on Wednesday, in which the COA has also sought compliance reports concerning the implementation of the Lodha Committee recommendations at the state level. The associations have been asked to submit these reports over e-mail by March 1. This is the first set of directives issued by the COA after it was appointed by the court on January 30.There has been confusion over the specifics of the nine-year tenure cap since the release of the Lodha Committee recommendations in January 2016. The original Lodha Committee recommendation regarding eligibility, which was passed by the Supreme Court on July 18 last year, had made it possible for an individual to serve nine years each at both BCCI and state level. A BCCI office-bearer’s cooling-off period could have been a three-year term at their state association, after which they could once again contest an election for a BCCI position. And if they won the BCCI post, the ensuing three-year term would serve as their cooling-off period from holding office at state level. An individual could therefore have spent 18 years in Indian cricket administration between the BCCI and his state association.On January 2, 2017, the Supreme Court stated in an order that, “A person shall be disqualified from being an Office Bearer if he or she has been an Office Bearer of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 9 years.” A day later, the Court, while modifying the order issued a day earlier, ruled that an office bearer would be disqualified in case he had completed a “cumulative period” of nine years at “BCCI or a state association.”The Lodha Committee’s interpretation of the Court’s modification of January 3 was that if an individual had finished nine years as an office-bearer, whether at BCCI or state level or both combined, that individual was ineligible to continue as an office-bearer at the BCCI or state level effective immediately.On January 20, the court said that its January 3 modification was likely “to create some ambiguity” and therefore it was issuing a fresh clarification on the tenure for an office bearer. It said an administrator would be disqualified if he “has been an office bearer of the BCCI for nine years or a State Association for the same period.”This fresh ruling was interpreted by the office-bearers as a reprieve and an indication that they could continue for nine years separately at BCCI and their respective states. Subsequently, senior administrators like BCCI joint secretary Amitabh Choudhury and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry have continued at the board despite having finished nine years as presidents of their respective state associations. On Monday, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, who has passed the nine-year cap as Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association president, attended the IPL 2017 auction as head of the league’s governing council.As an attempt to put an end to the confusion, the COA has now pointed out that it would stick to the Lodha Committee’s interpretation of the court’s order until a new directive is issued by the Supreme Court.The COA laid out its stand under the subhead: “Disqualification of office bearers/representatives/nominees/patron/advisor/committee member/council members of state/member association” in the e-mail to the sates on Wednesday.”The committee of administrators has been informed that there is lack of clarity on the exact scope and extent of the disqualification in terms of the order dated January 2, 2017, January 3, 2017 and January 20, 2017, passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” the COA said. “The committee of administrators is of the view that until there is complete clarity on the exact scope and extent of the disqualification in terms of the aforesaid order the committee of administrators should proceed on a strict undertaking/interpretation of the same.”As per the advice received by the committee of administrators, this strict understanding/interpretation has the effect on disqualifying all persons who fail to meet the norms recommended by the Lodha Committee and accepted by Supreme Court for being office bearers/representatives/nominees/patron/advisor/committee member/council members of state/member association.”Consequently, the states have been asked to submit list of their existing office bearers along with each individual’s elaborate details. Importantly, all administrators would also need to submit a written undertaking that they conform with the eligibility criteria to the COA by the March 1 deadline.The COA has also asked the state associations that have complied with the courts orders dated October 7 and October 21 last year to submit their resolution in writing by March 1. Last October, the court passed two orders which asked the BCCI to “cease and desist” from supplying funds to the states unless and until they gave a written undertaking that they would comply with the Lodha Committee recommendations as approved by the court.

West Ham: Moyes "definitely" interested in signing £50m "destroyer"

West Ham United could be in for Everton's Amadou Onana, as the player is "someone that Moyes would be interested in", believes transfer insider Dean Jones.

West Ham United transfer news – what's the latest on Amadou Onana?

And breathe, the transfer saga surrounding West Ham and Declan Rice finally looks to be over as David Ornstein confirmed yesterday that the Hammers and Arsenal have agreed on a fee of £100m plus £5m in add-ons, with just the payment structure to be resolved.

amadou-onana-everton-ayman-kari-transfer-gossip-dyche

With their biggest outgoing of the summer sorted, the East London club can now turn their attention towards potential incomings, and with the departure of their club captain, they're going to need a fair few names to come through the door of the London Stadium.

One of the names linked to the club is Everton's Belgian "destroyer", Onana.

According to The Sun, the Hammers are interested in the 21-year-old and see him as a potential replacement for the departing Rice and believe an offer in the region of £40m-£50m could be enough to tempt the Toffees into selling, with their FFP troubles still hanging over their heads.

West Ham tried to sign the player from Ligue 1 side Lille last summer but couldn't offer the same package that the Merseyside outfit could, but it could be second time lucky for the claret and blue.

However, with Onana's desire to play at "one of the biggest clubs recognised worldwide", would any offer from David Moyes' side be able to tempt him into what many might consider a sideways step?

What had transfer insider Dean Jones said about the links between West Ham United and Amadou Onana?

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: "I can definitely see him being someone that Moyes would be interested in."

However, given the player's desire to play for a club slightly above West Ham, he sees a move as unlikely, adding: "So at the moment, I find it hard to believe that West Ham will actually get him."

How good is Amadou Onana?

Despite featuring less often than he probably would've liked during last season's run-in, he had an undeniably brilliant debut season in the Premier League for Everton.

In a campaign that saw the historic club stutter and falter almost weekly, the young Belgian was one of the few shining lights in the team.

It's no surprise then that he was the subject of a failed £50m bid from runners-up Arsenal in the January transfer window – a team he would go onto put in a Man-of-the-Match performance against just a few weeks later as Everton dominated the Gunners in a shock 1-0 win.

It was a performance he was hailed for by the media, with Conor O'Neil of the Liverpool Echo calling him "outstanding" and Richard Buxton labelling the player "superb."

According to WhoScored, he has been great all season, averaging an impressive rating of 6.71 across his 33 appearances for the club.

If Moyes can somehow convince Onana that his project in East London can rival some of the elite clubs in the league, then the club should do all they can to get this deal over the line and make him an Iron.

Celtic Agree Fee For "Excellent" Forward

Celtic have agreed a £2.1m transfer fee with Gangwon FC for forward Yang Hyun-jun, however, a move is proving complicated.

What’s the latest Celtic transfer news?

It has been a busy few weeks off the pitch at Parkhead, which began when Ange Postecoglou left the cub to join Tottenham. Since then, Brendan Rodgers has been brought in for a second stint in charge of the Hoops, and new signings have been made.

The first player to arrive was midfielder Odin Thiago Holm, who joined from Eliteserien club Valerenga and signed a five-year contract in Glasgow. As well as Holm, Australian winger Marco Tilio has also penned a five-year deal with the Hoops, joining from Melbourne City.

There has been a major departure, though, with star winger Jota joining Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad in a deal worth £25m.

More attacking additions could be on the cards as a result, with Yang a player who has been linked with a move to Parkhead. Reports last month claimed that Celtic made a significant transfer offer for the K-League winger, with journalist Jason Lee saying:

“According to Korean media, Celtic have sent an official transfer offer to Gangwon FC for Yang Hyun-Jun. The offer is believed to be "significant and final" as Celtic await Gangwon's response. The player is eager to move to Celtic.”

There has now been a further update from Football Scotland, who say that Celtic and Gangwon have in fact agreed on a £2.1m deal which includes a 12% sell-on clause.

The player is keen to move to Scotland, however, Gangwon are now stalling over a deal as they believe Yang could help them avoid relegation. Gangwon want to keep their forward until January when their season finishes, but Yang is even willing to give up his salary to push through a move to join Rodgers’ side ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Former Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.

Who is Yang Hyun-jun?

Yang is primarily a right-winger who can also play on the left or through the middle, so would bring plenty of versatility to Rodgers’ attacking options and may rival current right-wingers James Forrest and Liel Abada, although the latter of the two has been linked with a move to Sporting Lisbon.

He was described as “excellent” and a “level above” in the media following a pre-season display against Tottenham last year and has contributed to 14 goals in 69 senior appearances for Gangwon.

The 21-year-old is under contract until the end of 2025 and has been described as an unpredictable and eye-catching player in the media, labelled as Gangwon’s up-and-coming star last year by the K League media.

Celtic have enjoyed plenty of success by bringing players in from the Asian market over recent years, and it looks as if Rodgers is keen to continue looking in that direction. Former manager Postecoglou signed the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Oh Hyeon-gyu from Japan and South Korea, and with a deal agreed for Yang, hopefully, he’ll be the next to arrive in Scotland.

Chelsea In Talks For £50m Gem Who’s Better Than Vlahovic

Chelsea may have already signed Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku this summer, while Romelu Lukaku is due to report back to the club for pre-season training, but Mauricio Pochettino is seemingly after at least one more striker.

Which players are coming to Chelsea?

The Blues will inevitably be linked with countless players between now and the end of the transfer window, but there seems to be some traction regarding speculation surrounding Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic.

Following widespread reports last week that Chelsea had made a move for the Serbia international, it has now been suggested by Dean Jones – via GiveMeSport – that a second bid has been lodged.

Juventus are said to be taking their time over a decision, however, with talks planned with other Premier League clubs. It has now emerged that Chelsea could instead get the opportunity to land arguably an even better player in Arsenal gem Folarin Balogun.

How many goals has Folarin Balogun scored?

Balogun netted 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances last season while on loan with Reims – only three other players scored more in the division, with Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe (29) leading the way.

However, no player in the French top flight last season contributed to more goals for their club than Balogun, who scored 47% of Reims' 45 goals, as per WhoScored. Next on that list was Alexandre Lacazette for Lyon (42%) and Habib Diallo for Strasbourg (39%).

Little wonder Reims head coach Will Still described Balogun as an "unbelievable" talent earlier this year, albeit while jokingly criticising the youngster for how little French he had learned at the time.

dusan-vlahovic-juventus-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-erling-haaland

The 22-year-old, who recently switched international allegiance from England to the United States, is now back at Arsenal but is expected to move on.

Balogun is said to only be interested in playing for a team where he is a regular starter, which may not be the case at Arsenal with Gabriel Jesus in place, while a loan exit has also been ruled out.

That could be good news for Chelsea as Football Transfers reports that Balogun's representatives have spoken to the Blues about a possible transfer between the London rivals.

Any deal could set Mauricio Pochettino's side back £50m, yet that would still be the same amount they would be paying for Vlahovic.

While Vlahovic is undoubtedly a talented player, his figures have dropped at an alarming rate since recording 0.92 goals or assists every 90 minutes with Fiorentina in the second half of the 2021-22 season, as per FBref.

That led to a £66.6m switch to Juventus, and after registering 0.67 in the second half of that season, it dropped to 0.56 in his first full campaign at the Allianz Stadium.

That 0.56 return compares to 0.69 for Balogun, in what must be said is a weaker side, while the former Reims loanee also comes out on top for shots on target percentage (41.3 v 30.8) and successful take-ons (1.05 v 0.65), among other metrics.

It may well be that Arsenal refuse to sell to a direct Premier League rival, but the deal certainly makes sense from Chelsea's perspective. Because whereas Vlahovic – who only scored ten goals in Serie A last term – appears to be on the way down, Balogun is very much on the way up.
