Agarkar: If Ashwin stays fit, can’t see India in much trouble this home season

India completed a 3-0 whitewash in devastating fashion as a seven-wicket haul from R Ashwin shot New Zealand out for 153 in their last innings of the series. India declared just under an hour from tea, after Cheteshwar Pujara had completed his eighth Test hundred, to set New Zealand a target of 475 and give themselves a day and a half to take 10 wickets. They only needed 44.5 overs, as New Zealand lost nine wickets for 115 runs in the post-tea session.Ashwin’s figures of 7 for 59 were his best in Test cricket, as were his match figures of 13 for 140. He picked up his 21st five-wicket haul, his sixth ten-wicket match haul, his seventh Player of the Match award and seventh Player of the Series award – fourth in a row – as well. There probably isn’t a more influential cricketer anywhere in the world today. Certainly no one has played a bigger part in India securing the No. 1 Test ranking, a feat they got to celebrate when Virat Kohli was handed the ICC Test championship mace at the end of the match, in front of a capacity crowd in Indore.Set a similar task last year in another dead-rubber Test, on a similar slow turner at Feroz Shah Kotla, South Africa chose to block their way to a draw. They didn’t succeed, but they did make India toil for 143.1 overs. New Zealand, having until now given India a harder time on this tour than South Africa did in theirs, adopted an entirely different approach and collapsed spectacularly.Their two most accomplished batsmen, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, exemplified this approach. Both came out looking to attack Ashwin, their tormentor through the series, and ended up playing a part in their own undoing.Williamson hit Ashwin for three fours in his first two overs, either side of tea, but in that time also gave the bowler enough of a clue that he was looking to step across his stumps and play him with the turn as much as possible. He shuffled across again to the eleventh ball he faced from Ashwin, premeditatedly, and a flatter, quicker one turned in and trapped him in front. Like he had done to Kumar Sangakkara on the 2015 tour of Sri Lanka, Ashwin had dismissed Williamson four times in four innings. In his first over at the crease, Taylor jumped out and hit Ashwin over the top for a four and a six off successive balls. As Ashwin’s spell continued, he stepped out again to whip him over midwicket, and then drove him against the turn through the covers. Having gone to 32 off 24, though, he chanced a sweep off a ball that was too full for the shot. It sneaked under his bat and bowled him.Luke Ronchi, James Neesham and Martin Guptill all fell in the next seven overs, the latter two to Ravindra Jadeja, and it seemed almost certain that the match wouldn’t go into a fifth day. BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner hinted that it just might, while putting on 24 for the seventh wicket, but Ashwin came back to break their partnership, bowling over the wicket to the left-handed Santner and beating him with natural variation. Coming forward to defend, Santner inside-edged the ball into his pad and then onto the stumps.India didn’t have to wait too long for the eighth and ninth wickets, but Watling and Trent Boult briefly raised the possibility of their having to come back on Wednesday to take the tenth, by putting on the longest partnership of the innings. They stuck around for 10.1 overs, causing India a bit of frustration – Jadeja bowled a 45kph donkey drop to Boult, Ashwin dragged down a legbreak to Watling – and threatening to take the fourth day into an extra half-hour, before Boult came down the track to drive Ashwin and popped back a waist-high return catch.Cheteshwar Pujara finished with a century and three fifties in the series•BCCI

India declared halfway through the morning session, one ball after Pujara brought up his hundred by helping a short ball from James Neesham to the fine leg boundary. It was a fitting way to reach the landmark, given that the area behind the wicket had fetched him 57 of his runs and six of his nine fours, with the lap-sweep and late cut his go-to shots against the spinners. Having gone to lunch batting on 50 off 98 balls, he had sped away to score 51 off 50 in the second session. At the other end, Ajinkya Rahane helped an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 58 hurry along at 6.44 an over, stepping out to play his favourite chips down the ground and inside-out drives.Ahead by 276 overnight, India had only extended their lead by eight runs when M Vijay was run-out by a brilliant piece of fielding from Guptill in the eighth over of the morning. In walked Gautam Gambhir, who had retired hurt late on the third evening with a shoulder injury. His re-entry sparked an immediate upsurge in India’s run rate, as he took frequent singles against New Zealand’s one-day fields, and pounced on anything remotely loose, his standout shot a drive drilled past extra-cover off Boult.Gambhir’s urgency rubbed off on Pujara as well. He ran as fast as his troubled knees would take him, ending up with a dirt-streaked shirt from all the times he had to dive into the crease, and looked outside his usual repertoire of shots, even jumping out of his crease at one point to flat-bat Boult back over his head. The pair added 76 for the second wicket before Gambhir fell for 50 off 56 balls, chipping Jeetan Patel to short extra-cover. Kohli, the first-innings double-centurion, fell in the sixth over after lunch, given lbw looking to sweep Patel although replays suggested the ball may have struck his pad outside the line of off stump. With nine overs to bat out before tea, New Zealand lost one wicket, Umesh Yadav going around the wicket in his first over and attacking the stumps to get Tom Latham lbw playing around his front pad. New Zealand were 38 for 1 at tea. They probably wouldn’t have imagined that it would all be over after just one more session.

England complete 4-0 sweep after SL crumble for 78

Strong all-round performances from Laura Marsh, Danielle Hazell and Natalie Sciver took England to a 162-run victory on the reserve day in a rain-interrupted fourth ODI in Colombo

England Women’s offspinning duo of Laura Marsh and Danielle Hazell took seven wickets between them to decimate Sri Lanka Women for 78 and seal a 162-run win in the fourth ODI in Colombo. With the win, England completed a 4-0 sweep and their sixth consecutive series win.In a match that was pushed to the reserve day by the weather, Sri Lanka were bowled out in 33.1 overs, with Marsh taking 4 for 21 and Hazell returning figures of 3 for 21 – her best in ODIs. That, after England had put up 240 for 9 on Thursday after being lifted by contributions from Natalie Sciver (77) and the lower order.Sciver performed with the ball too, and was the first to strike, taking out Sri Lanka’s openers inside eight overs to reduce them to 21 for 2. Twenty balls later, in the space of which Sri Lanka had added just three runs, Marsh had her first victim, sending back Lasanthi Madhushani to expose Sri Lanka’s middle order.Marsh and Hazell then scythed through the middle order with the next three wickets falling for 17 runs as Sri Lanka slipped to 47 for 6. Prasadani Weerakkody, the only batsman to show some fight with 32, added 29 runs for the seventh wicket with Nilakshi de Silva – the highest Sri Lanka could manage – before the home team lost their last four wickets for the addition of two runs.England began in similarly poor fashion on Thursday, losing opener Tammy Beaumont for a duck in the second over after choosing to bat. Amy Jones (28) and Heather Knight (11), the captain, steadied them briefly with a 30-run second-wicket stand, before England slid drastically, losing five wickets for 20 runs to become 58 for 6.Natalie Sciver, who had walked out just at the start of the collapse with England 38 for 2, began the recovery. Like Sciver, who later supported them with the ball, Hazell and Marsh made crucial contributions with the bat. Sciver and Hazell added 104 runs for the seventh wicket. Sciver was bowled by Chamari Atapattu for a 74-ball 77, before Hazell added 44 more for the eighth wicket with Marsh. Marsh hung around till the end, staying not out on 36. She was helped by No. 10 Beth Langston, who chipped in with 21, to complete England’s recovery before rain stopped play.Inoshi Priyadharshani and Inoka Ranaweera inflicted the bulk of the damage, finishing with three wickets each.

Arsenal: Personal Terms Agreed For World Class Signing

Arsenal seem to be closing in on their top target for the summer, with reports referencing a deal close to completion…

What's the latest on Declan Rice to Arsenal?

That's according to Football Insider, who claims that Edu has agreed terms with West Ham United's captain Declan Rice.

The Gunners are set to make an initial bid of around £92m, with £8m worth of add-ons to take the deal into a nine-figure sum.

The 24-year-old has also agreed personal terms, seemingly rendering this deal all but done. Having won the Europa Conference League with the Hammers, their chairman David Sullivan admitted that his exit was an almost certainty. This latest report seeks to confirm that.

Would Declan Rice improve Gabriel Jesus?

Whilst the acquisition of someone who was originally a defensive midfielder might have little impact on a striker on the surface, what Rice has accomplished this season alongside his growth has made him much more than someone to simply protect the back four.

His 7.19 average Sofascore rating for the term, whilst largely buoyed by defensive figures, is also married to the nine goal contributions he recorded in all competitions. This was partnered with an 88% pass accuracy, one key pass, 2.1 tackles and 1.7 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

What is set to make the England international so important in bolstering Jesus' numbers is a mix of all those statistics just mentioned, as not only will he provide the defensive foundation for the Brazilian to occupy better goalscoring areas, but this added creativity from midfield could prove crucial.

In what has been an injury-hit debut year in north London, the former Manchester City finisher still notched 11 goals with seven assists. However, his main role ended up being the spearhead of Mikel Arteta's pressing system, rather than the goalscoring monster he likely dreams of being.

By signing Rice, who boasts incredible football intelligence as well as technical proficiency, he could perhaps occupy spaces that the ageing Granit Xhaka could not, offering further fluidity and athleticism to allow his would-be 26-year-old teammate to apply more of a focus on finding the back of the net.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal

After all, he was not lauded as a "world-class" asset by manager Danny Cowley for nothing. His efforts in dictating the play could see the Gunners exert even more control over games than they have done, surely resulting in more chances for the forward.

Rice has starred in a struggling Irons team, and the step-up will likely not phase someone so confident and talented.

Arteta and Edu will hope that he can be the final piece to complete their side, arguably improving everyone around him.

Phil Hay Shares Leeds Manager Update Out Of Elland Road

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has said that final managerial interviews will take place early next week, with three candidates in the frame.

What’s the latest Leeds manager news?

The Whites are on the hunt for a fourth manager in less than 12 months, with Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce all coming and going.

Leeds, and by extension the 49ers Enterprises, who have agreed on a deal to take full control from Andrea Radrizzani, have made a start on their summer plans by bringing in Nick Hammond as an interim football advisor to oversee their transfer business.

However, the club’s top managerial target, Brendan Rodgers, has made it clear that he doesn’t want to drop down to the Championship and looks set to join Celtic, but Hay has shared a development he’s heard from Elland Road on the process to appoint a new manager.

Taking to Twitter over the last 48 hours, the reliable reporter said that “final interviews” are planned for early next week, with the 49ers looking to make an appointment.

“Looking like the process to appoint will run into next week, with final interviews planned on the other side of the weekend. First group of players due back for pre-season on July 2.”

Within his report for The Athletic, Hay named Carlos Corberan, Daniel Farke and Scott Parker as options.

“Final interviews are planned for early next week with West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan and former Norwich City manager Daniel Farke, recently sacked by German side Borussia Monchengladbach, two names in the frame. Scott Parker has also been considered but Leicester are also considering making an offer to him.”

Time is ticking…

As Hay mentions, Leeds’ players are set to report back for pre-season at the beginning of July, and hopefully, by then, a chosen manager will have made a start on the club’s plans for the new campaign.

After relegation from the Premier League last season, Leeds have plenty to sort out in a short space of time both in the boardroom and when it comes to ins and outs of the playing squad, with a first pre-season fixture against Manchester United scheduled for July 12.

It looks like it could be one of Corberan, Farke or Parker to arrive in Yorkshire, with Farke and Parker having a previous history of earning promotion to the top flight. Corberan, meanwhile, took Huddersfield to the playoff final back in 2022, so it seems as if Leeds are going down the tried and trusted route, and it’ll be interesting to see who impresses in final talks.

Nortje bowls Warriors to 107-run win; Ontong 225 in draw

Right-arm pacer Anrich Nortje’s career-best match haul of 9 for 98 helped Warriors pick up their second win of the season in their 2016-17 Sunfoil Series match against Knights in Port Elizabeth. Nortje bagged a career-best 6 for 44 in the first innings to rout Knights for 179 and give Warriors a 160-run first-innings lead. He then took three more in the final innings, and, along with new-ball partner Basheeru-Deen Walters, bowled Warriors to a 107-run win at St George’s Park.Warriors, after being put in, scored 339, courtesy identical scores of 71 from Colin Ackermann and Lesiba Ngoepe, as well as solid contributions from the rest of the order. Pacers Marchant de Lange and Shadley van Schalkwyk inflicted all of the damage, with de Lange removing the top-three and the latter accounting for the bottom-seven to finish with 7 for 82 – his best figures.Nortje then sent back Luthando Mnyanda and Theunis de Bruyn, the Knights captain, for low scores, but half-centuries from Michael Erlank and David Miller drove Knights to 126 for 2. From there, they fell away, losing their last six wickets for just 19 runs.Duanne Olivier’s five-wicket haul kept Warriors to 236 in their second innings, where they were lifted by a 70 from Lesiba Ngoepe at No. 7. Knights were set 397 and their captain de Bruyn fought hard with a century, but found little support as his team was bowled out for 289.A run glut between Dolphins and Cape Cobras was drawn at Boland Park. Cobras captain Justin Ontong’s double-century stole the show and pulled his team out of serious trouble; Cobras were reeling at 22 for 4 in reply to Dolphins’ 478 when Ontong rescued them through a 202-run fifth-wicket partnership with Keegan Petersen, the wicketkeeper, who contributed 86. Ontong added a further 60 with Dayyaan Galiem for the seventh wicket, and 144 for the eighth with No. 9 Dane Piedt (61). The stand ended with Ontong’s dismissal for 225 – a knock that contained 24 fours – but despite his career-best effort, Cobras were bowled out for 447 and conceded a lead of 31.When Dolphins batted, they lost wickets in a cluster on either side of an 83-run third-wicket stand between Divan van Wyk (38) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (56). At 115 for 5, Khaya Zondo, who top scored with 157, and Morne van Wyk (79), the captain and wicketkeeper, came together for a 201-run stand. Dolphins were further boosted by contributions from the tail, led by Robbie Frylinck’s 58 at No. 9. Dane Paterson took 5 for 79.Zondo followed up his first-innings century with an unbeaten 57 in the second. Daryn Smit struck 82 off just 113 balls and put on 64 for the third wicket with van Jaarsveld (30). Van Wyk, unbeaten on 19, was giving Zondo company, having taken Dolphins to 207 for 4 when stumps were drawn on the final day.Titans captain Henry Davids’ unbeaten 150 gave them a 225-run first-innings lead over Lions in their drawn encounter at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. When Davids walked out, a solid platform had already been laid by the Titans openers, Heino Kuhn (71) and Aiden Markram (53). Davids then built on it to take Titans from 130 for 2 to 431 for 6 declared. Davids was supported well by No. 8 David Wiese, who struck an unbeaten 71 and helped add 147 unbeaten runs for the seventh wicket. That, after Lions had been cleaned up for 206 after deciding to bat first. Right-arm medium pacer Malusi Siboto took 7 for 48 to direct the destruction. Lions were helped by contributions from the middle order, with Yaseen Valli (40), Dwaine Pretorius (72) and Mangaliso Mosehle (41) scoring 153 runs between them between Nos. 5 and 7.Lions put up a much-improved performance in their second innings. Reeza Hendricks (49) and Rassie van der Dussen (76 not out) stitched together 109 for the opening wicket. Nicky van den Bergh, unbeaten on 41, was giving van der Dussen company when play ended with Lions on 187 for 2.Titans are the current table-toppers with two wins from five matches.

West Ham Pursuing Deal For £25.7m-Rated Talent

West Ham United appear to be leading the Premier League pack in the pursuit of Yunus Musah – and he could soon decide on his future, according to a report from AS, via Sport Witness.

Are West Ham United signing Yunus Musah?

The 20-year-old is already a Valencia regular despite his age and was initially thrown into the first-team fold at just 17-years-old. Despite being just a teenager at the time, he went on to play 32 times in La Liga that campaign and has gone from strength-to-strength ever since. In 2022/23, he managed a further 33 outings – meaning he has very nearly closed in on 100 league games for the club already.

He's also a regular for his country already too. He plies his trade for the USA and has 24 caps to his name so far, with the youngster already featuring heavily as part of their 'new-look' team in the middle of the field.

It's no surprise either when you consider how he compares to some of the other names in his position amongst the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe. With 3.07 progressive carries per 90 for example, he ranks within the top eight percent for that stat. It shows just how adept Musah is at being able to take the ball and drive up the field – the possibly outgoing Declan Rice ranks just below him in the top 15 per cent for that metric.

Yunus-Musah-Valencia

Now, according to a report from AS, via Sport Witness, the player could be about to get a chance in England and the Premier League. It states that West Ham are keen to do business for the player and that Valencia themselves are looking to sell him on to raise funds – which means that a deal to send him to the Hammers could happen.

No official bid appears to have been made yet but Musah himself is set to decide on where he will play next season very soon.

What is Musah's transfer value?

No official fee is mentioned in terms of what Valencia might want for Musah but CIES Football Observatory estimate this his value is around the 30 million Euros mark (or £25.7m). With the Spanish side desperately looking to raise money then, a fee of that amount or perhaps even less could well tempt them.

The signs are that he would most definitely be worth that fee too. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig called Musah the USA player with "the highest ceiling" in terms of his potential and added that he has an "elite engine" and that he is a "high-quality box-to-box midfielder".

It sounds as though he could tick plenty of boxes for the Hammers then and considering his talents, it could be worth the club forking out the money and brining him in this window.

Anderson-Ashwin confrontation 'disappointing' – Cook

A confrontation between James Anderson and R Ashwin provided a “sour end” to the fourth Test in Mumbai, according to Alastair Cook

George Dobell in Mumbai12-Dec-20163:04

Trott: Saw frustration from Anderson’s side

A confrontation between James Anderson and R Ashwin provided a “sour end” to the fourth Test in Mumbai, according to Alastair Cook.Anderson, England’s last batsman, received quite the welcome party when he walked out to bat in the dying moments of the match. Ashwin, in particular, appeared to have taken exception to his comments on the fourth evening that seemed, at best, grudgingly respectful of Virat Kohli’s dominance, and accompanied him for much of his walk to the middle. While it is unclear exactly what was said, it seems safe to assume Ashwin was not offering his full support. Play was delayed briefly before Kohli and umpire Marais Erasmus stepped in to ensure order was restored. The England camp felt Anderson’s comments were, in Cook’s words, “blown out of proportion”. But while Cook accepted Ashwin and his team-mates were “sticking up for their captain” he still described the episode as unnecessary and disappointing.”It was a bit of a sour end really,” Cook said. “It was a disappointing end in terms of how well the spirit between both sides has been played.”It was clearly in reference to what Jimmy said yesterday which has kind of been blown out of all proportions, which it can do here. He was just stating a fact which if you asked Virat is probably quite true. But yes, it was obviously just sticking up for their captain which I thought was slightly unnecessary.”Kohli was more relaxed about the incident and confirmed that he had made his peace with Anderson and agreed to “move on”.”For the first time I was trying to calm things down in the middle at a time when [Anderson] is involved,” he said. “Ashwin wasn’t pleased with what he said in the press, but I didn’t even know about it. So I didn’t know what to make of it. I was laughing about it.”Ashwin wasn’t too impressed and he let him know, not using any bad words honestly. I think he told him he was pretty disappointed with what he said and it is important to accept defeat as it is. Things like that. Just general, you know how Ashwin is, he is to the point, he can really strike you well and he doesn’t need to say bad words. Later on I told James these things happen and let’s move on.”While Kohli said he was “not going to sit here and comment about someone else’s faults” he had already expressed his views. Having suggested England’s batsmen lacked “intent” as they battled to save the Test in Visakhapatnam, he told Star Sports after this match that England had played too expansively as they were “not so confident of their defence”.He may well have a point. Just as Anderson may have had a point about Kohli’s record in England and Parthiv Patel may have had a point about the limitations of England’s spinners and the early struggles of Jos Buttler in the first innings of this game. The way in which these views are expressed, which sometimes seems intended to goad the opposition, is the issue. But there is history between these teams. India felt England’s behaviour towards them was poor on the tour of 2014 – in particular, the alleged incident between Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja was never satisfactorily resolved from an Indian perspective – and England can feel their proud record against India crumbling by the moment.Either way, it all seems unnecessary. India have proved themselves the better side. No amount of comment will change the scoreline.
