Players' association will empower women's cricket – Edulji

Former India Women captain Diana Edulji has said the creation of a players’ association – one of several recommendations of the Lodha committee that was approved by the Supreme Court in a watershed verdict – will empower women cricketers in the country. Edulji is a part of the four-member steering committee, led by former union home secretary GK Pillai, that has been tasked with the responsibility of setting up a players’ association.Edulji said women players now had an outlet to express their grievances and offer suggestions. “I don’t know about the men’s side, at least from the women’s side some of the players are scared to speak,” Edulji told ESPNcricinfo. “Maybe with me there, they can come to me, speak to me and I can put forward their views to the authorities and see how best they can be benefited.”Edulji felt a women’s representative of the players’ association in the Apex Council, which will replace the working committee, would ensure greater accountability. “People will be more answerable. That will also help because we need somebody to listen to us,” she said. “There is a women’s committee in the BCCI but most of them are not players. Women’s cricket needs a little push and I think this is the right time for it.”Edulji said the players’ association shouldn’t be viewed as an anti-establishment body, and that there was a more positive attitude towards women’s cricket with initiatives like the introduction of central contracts for players. “We don’t want to antagonise BCCI. We don’t want a confrontation, and we want to work together. It is just two parties working together, the players get a little voice in a proper way. [It is] not striking or union types,” she said.”The current lot – I have been with the MCA as well in the cricket advisory committee as well – is favourable towards improving women’s cricket. Even in BCCI, I have had a word with Anurag Thakur and they are quite positive.”Edulji, however, was unsure of when the steering committee was going to meet to discuss the formation of the association. “We haven’t officially got any information. We have to wait because only the day before [yesterday] have we got the verdict,” she said. “We haven’t even been sounded out [by the BCCI] yet.”

ESPNcricinfo previews the first one-day international between Ireland and Pakistan

Big PictureThere is not much time for Pakistan to bask in their Oval victory. They have since hopped on a plane to Dublin as they switch into one-day mode with a two-match series against Ireland. The contrast between their rise in Test cricket and struggles in the one-day game has been stark: they sit ninth in the ODI rankings, outside of the automatic qualification places for the 2019 World Cup.Since the 2015 World Cup they have been captained by Azhar Ali who suffered a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh before two series wins over Zimbabwe – although they lost a match to them in Harare – and one against Sri Lanka. They took the lead against England last year before being comfortably beaten 3-1 and were overturned 2-0 in New Zealand in January. There are three players in this current squad who will have memories of the first meeting between these sides on that famous day in Jamaica: Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Umar Gul were part of the three-wicket defeat. Six years later, Hafeez and Malik were also involved in a tie in Dublin. But, like Pakistan, Ireland are struggling in the one-day rankings, currently adrift of Afghanistan and Zimbabwe at the bottom. Their crown of leading Associate has been challenged; they shared their recent series against Afghanistan 2-2. There is a concerning reliance on Ed Joyce at the top of the order – against Afghanistan he was almost 200 runs ahead of Ireland’s next highest scorer – and they need much more from the likes of Paul Stirling and captain William Porterfield.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)

Pakistan LLLLLIn the spotlightAzhar Ali regained his form in the final two Tests against England, making a fine century at Edgbaston, a solid 49 after being promoted to open the batting and then finishing the series with a six. Now he has to switch his focus back to trying to find a winning formula in one-day cricket. And he needs to score runs as well. After being appointed captain he enjoyed an early bounce with two centuries in first five games, but has now gone 11 innings without a fifty. His strike-rate, too, has come under scrutiny with the pressure it can put on the rest of the top order.Barry McCarthy, who plays county cricket for Durham, has enjoyed an impressive start to his Ireland career with 14 wickets in six ODIs. He helped cover for the absence of Boyd Rankin against Afghanistan and will be asked to do the same again after Rankin was ruled out of the rest of the season with injury. He can be expected to share the new ball with Tim Murtagh.Teams newsRankin has been ruled out with a stress fracture of the tibia which removes one of Ireland’s senior pace bowlers. But they have not called in a replacement with Craig Young now available after an elbow injury. Of the surface, Ed Joyce said: “We’re expecting two good pitches here as they normally are at Malahide.”Stats and trivia William Porterfield and Kevin O’Brien are currently jostling to be Ireland’s leading ODI run-scorer: Porterfield sits on 2591 and O’Brien has 2561 Sharjeel Khan made 253 runs in four innings during the recent tri-series involving England Lions and Sri Lanka A The overall head-to-head for these sides is 4-1 to Pakistan with one tie.Quotes”In the last few years we haven’t played very good cricket in one-dayers. Our performances are not as consistent as in Test cricket, and we need to really improve our skills.”
“These guys are definitely favourites but we’ve got a good one-day team and are hopeful of giving them a few good games. There’s a lot of guys in good form in England which bodes well for us.”

Arsenal: Gunners See £158K-P/W Star as Huge Upgrade

Arsenal view Barcelona star Jules Kounde as the "leap in quality" manager Mikel Arteta "needs" for defence as they eye a move, according to reports.

Who could join Arsenal this summer?

The Premier League side fought long and hard this season in contention for what would have been a first league title in 20 years, but after being beaten to the punch by champions Man City, it's time to prepare for next campaign.

Gunners transfer chief Edu, as he recently admitted in an interview with ESPN (via 90min), has already begun preparations for the summer window.

"Our planning has already been done," said Edu."It has already reached the owners. Now, we're taking things step by step. We're focused on how we will finish the season, but we've put in the planning and I'm very excited."

Central midfield is viewed as a real priority within Arsenal, according to reports, with West Ham star Declan Rice and Brighton's Moises Caicedo among the names they could sign.

Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan, Leicester City playmaker James Maddison and Chelsea's Mason Mount are also of interest to the north Londoners, with reports suggesting they could also go after centre-backs.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is one name to be mentioned by the press, with another report now claiming they're interested in a move for Kounde.

The France international could apparently leave Barcelona this summer, mainly due to his dissatisfaction at playing right-back, with Arteta's joining both Man City and Man United in targeting him.

This is according to one Spanish source, who state Arsenal view Kounde as the "leap in quality" needed at centre-back. It's claimed the former Sevilla star "would be a great addition that fits perfectly", and Barca would be willing to part ways in the event of a suitable offer.

Who is Jules Kounde?

The £158,000-per-week star has been a fixture under Xavi in La Liga this season, playing the seventh-most minutes of any Barca player (WhoScored).

Kounde also ranks among their best-performing crop by average match rating, with only Gerard Pique and Andreas Christensen averaging more clearances per 90 in the Spanish top flight (WhoScored).

Journalist Raul Varela even likened him to Sergio Ramos in 2021, writing for Marca:

"Kounde is the closest thing to Ramos that the Spanish league has to offer at the moment. In terms of leadership, charisma, physical power, technical quality, versatility and now, it seems, even a love affair with goals."

If Arsenal decide to step up their interest and negotiate a good price for the 24-year-old, he could be a stellar alternative to William Saliba.

Arsenal Signing £120m Monster Is Bad News For Partey

Arsenal appear set to implement their plan of action in the race to secure their top summer transfer target.

What's the latest on Declan Rice to Arsenal?

That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who gave his verdict on Mikel Arteta's pursuit on West Ham United captain Declan Rice.

Referenced in a brief report on CaughtOffside, it is noted that the Gunners will put a bid in to tempt the midfield to the Emirates, but only once the east London outfit has played their Europa Conference League final on the 7th of June.

Believed to be demanding an eye-watering sum of £120m, Hammers boss David Moyes will be hoping he can instigate a bidding war, with Bayern Munich also reportedly sniffing around his main man.

Would Declan Rice replace Thomas Partey?

For such a mouth-watering price tag, the 24-year-old will not be joining as a rotation option. He will be welcomed as the shining light of their new-look midfield, rendering others like Thomas Partey insignificant despite his £45m move back in 2020.

The Ghanaian general has finally seemed to hit his stride in north London after a previously tumultuous injury-hit tenure, and was a vital cog in Arteta's unlikely title push which was not to culminate in silverware. The 29-year-old offered a combative yet calming presence in the engine room, however, this new acquisition could render him obsolete.

Everything Partey does, it could be argued that Rice either does better.

With a penchant for breaking up the play and offloading to his nearest creator, the former Atletico Madrid ace this season maintained an average rating of 7.11, upheld through an 88% pass accuracy and 0.8 key passes, 2.1 tackles and 1.2 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

thomas-partey-arsenal

It would be disingenuous to downplay these figures, but it instead proves just how outstanding the England international has been to achieve the same or better in a relegation-threatened side.

His average rating is elevated to 7.19, with an 88% pass accuracy rendering the two at the same metronomic level. However, the inclusion of one key pass per game is a steady improvement that suggests a killer instinct that Partey lacks, with his four goals and two assists supporting that.

Despite both recording 2.1 tackles per game too, Rice's 1.7 interceptions and 1.5 clearances edge him defensively, via Sofascore.

It is this tireless work rate that has led to further praise, with pundit and former Arsenal striker Alan Smith having previously suggested that he's "like two players" for the Irons.

With the potential newcomer set to offer fresh impetus in the heart of midfield, to usurp the man who is regarded as the heartbeat of Arteta's team, his all-around creative and defensive offerings must have enamoured the Spanish boss, who refuses to be deterred in his relentless pursuit.

As such, the deal would spell bad news for Partey, who might well see his position under fire.

Warner hails Australia's 'scrappy' successes

The ball still spun, and the sell-out crowds bayed for Sri Lanka, but Australia have comfortably won the limited-overs series playing “scrappy cricket”, captain David Warner said

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Sep-2016The ball still spun, and the sell-out crowds bayed for Sri Lanka, but Australia have comfortably won the limited-overs series playing “scrappy cricket”, captain David Warner said.Warner took Australia’s reins when the ODI series was tied 1-1, but has won each of the five matches since then. His team has been particularly impressive in the T20s, winning the first by 86 runs, and the second by four wickets with 13 balls to spare, despite having lost six wickets for 27 runs.”I think the guys showed a lot of determination and fight to overcome the conditions, which were very, very challenging and something that we are not very used to,” Warner said. “The Test guys had to make an adjustment to make – from the Test match conditions to the one-day conditions.”You saw scrappy cricket during the one-day series, where the highest score was 280 here. And then we were scrapping to get to 200. It was good grinding cricket. It was something that we’re not used to. The encouraging signs mean that we’ve worked really hard to win both series. “Though Australia have fared much better against spin in the limited-overs series, Warner suggested that didn’t necessarily make them better players of spin in the Test format. He was, however, pleased with the seam attack, which prospered in conditions not known to favour quick bowlers.”We knew once the shine got off the ball, the ball was going to spin consistently,” Warner said. “In one-day cricket it’s a bit different – you can’t have two in close with slip and a leg slip. It’s just not possible. The reverse sweeps, sitting in the crease to pinch the ones and twos, and rotating the strike, are all much easier in this game than in the Tests, where it was very, very tough for us as a batting team. But the way the bowlers conducted themselves and reduced totals after losing the toss consistently, was a fantastic effort.”Maxwell had also said good T20 scores in Asia didn’t guarantee better Test performances, though he has now starred in consecutive matches as opener. He hit the best innings of the match again, scoring 66 off 29 balls to break the back of the target during the Powerplay. He remains a makeshift opener however, having replaced the injured Aaron Finch in this series.”Maxwell is a very good player of spin inside the first six,” Warner said. “He can chance his arm. He can reverse sweep and sweep. What he did today and the other day was no fluke. That’s exactly what he can do when given the opportunity. We know with the team we have a structure there, and once Aaron Finch comes back in, he’ll probably have to move down the order and assess what his game plan is again. We’ve seen him do it at the top, we’ve seen him doing it in the middle – there’s no excuse.”Warner, who has been critical of bowler-friendly nature of the limited-overs pitches in Sri Lanka, said the Khettarama surface was the worst of the lot.”The wicket probably wasn’t up to scratch in the games. In the last game at Pallekele the wicket was outstanding – I know we played 260, but both teams felt like the wicket was very encouraging. We could hit over the top. There was nice, consistent bounce. Here it was very, very tough.”

Tottenham: Ange Wants To Bring "World Class" 39 Y/O to Spurs

Incoming manager Ange Postecoglou is looking to bring his Celtic assistant coach John Kennedy with him to Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Times.

Is Ange Postecoglou coming to Spurs?

After he clinched a domestic treble with Celtic at the weekend, Spurs have now confirmed that Postcoglou is on his way to north London, and will commence work on July 1.

The Australian, following their 3-1 Scottish Cup victory over Inverness at Hampden Park on Saturday, has agreed to become Spurs' next manager after Antonio Conte.

"Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play," said chairman Daniel Levy upon his appointment."He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our Club. We are excited to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead."

The former Celtic boss will join Tottenham and reports have already started coming out suggesting that he is set to be backed by Spurs with additions this summer.

Leicester City star James Maddison is among the targets on Tottenham's radar and it appears they can now focus on the looming transfer market.

Postecoglou will also be looking to shape the backroom in his own image as he attempts to reinstall a brand of attacking football and positivity at N17.

According to a report by The Times, he already has plans in that regard, with the Australian "keen" on stealing away his assistant manager Kennedy down south.

Spurs let go of a lot of their staff when Cristian Stellini left as interim boss, and Postecoglou will need to replace them. He apparently doesn't usually take his assistants between jobs, with Kennedy being the obvious exception.

Ryan Mason may well also decide he wants his own gig elsewhere after chairman Daniel Levy opted not to take a chance on him as permanent manager.

Despite Postecoglou wanting to bring Kennedy to Tottenham, he may well have a hard time in doing so, with Celtic eager to hang on to their 39-year-old who is highly thought of.

Who is John Kennedy?

The coach has worked his way up the ladder at Parkhead, having been under the tutelage of many previous Hoops bosses like Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon.

Kennedy briefly served as interim Celtic manager when Lennon resigned in 2021 and Celtic's board apparently rate him a lot.

The former Scotland international, who was forced to retire from playing at the age of just 26, has also been called a "world-class" coach by former Chelsea star Damien Duff.
