Amid Everton's current battle to stave off relegation, one concern for manager Sean Dyche will be the lack of a reliable, experienced option at left-back, with Ben Godfrey having been deployed as something of a makeshift option in recent games.

While the recent draw with Tottenham Hotspur did see the Englishman impress due to his 'athleticism and physicality' – according to the Echo's Chris Beesley – the 25-year-old does need to show 'more composure at times', with that perhaps stemming from the fact that the former Norwich City man is typically suited to a centre-back berth.

The fact that the York native is starting ahead of usual full-back Vitaliy Mykolenko is a marker of the latter man's struggles during his time in England to date, with the former Dynamo Kyiv ace – who arrived at Goodison on a £17.9m deal in January 2022 – having been described as the "defensive weak link" in the side by journalist Richard Buxton.

Those woes are laid bare by the fact that the Ukrainian has won just 49% of his total duels this season and been dribbled past on average 0.6 times per game from his 28 Premier League appearances, having notably looked 'slightly out of his depth' in the Merseyside derby defeat earlier this year, according to 90min's Jude Summerfield.

The 23-year-old has also been unable to make his mark in an attacking sense after failing to provide a single goal involvement in the league this season, with it hard to see just what the 5 foot 11 man is offering to Dyche and co.

As such, the former Burnley boss no doubt wishes he was able to call upon a beloved figure of the club's past in the form of Leighton Baines, with the now-retired ace likely to have made a real impact on this struggling side when in his prime.

How good was Leighton Baines?

While the Merseysiders have also had Lucas Digne on their books in recent years, even the current Aston Villa man was unable to get anywhere close to emulating the brilliant consistency of Baines at left-back, with the former England international having enjoyed a stellar 13-year stint at the club as a player.

Now working with the club's youth stars following his retirement in 2020, the 38-year-old was initially snapped up from Wigan Athletic by David Moyes back in 2007, with the Scotsman able to strike a deal for what proved to be a bargain price of just £6m.

Despite attracting attention throughout his time at Goodison – having notably been the subject of an offer from Manchester United in 2013 following Moyes' move to Old Trafford – the Kirkby-born ace remained loyal to the club for over a decade, repeatedly churning out impressive displays down the left flank.

Hailed as "unbelievable" by ex-teammate Steve Pienaar in 2019, Baines was something of an attacking weapon from his full-back berth, having ended his Premier League career with 32 goals and 53 assists to his name – the latter tally currently the second-most of any defender in the competition's history.

With a "wand of a left foot" – in the words of pundit Kevin Phillips – the 30-cap menace was able to cause carnage both from open play and from set pieces, with Dyche likely to love having such a creative asset in his ranks.

As Phillips also noted, the 5 foot 7 machine is a true club "legend" and was always a "nine out of ten every week", with such consistency a rare commodity – particularly over such a lengthy period of time.

While Everton do need to look to the future and try and sort out the mess that they have found themselves in, it is rather frustrating that they can't call upon legendary figures of the past, like Baines, to revive their fortunes.

Glasgow Rangers’ failings in the transfer market over the previous couple of seasons have arguably been discussed more so than any of the actual business completed by the Ibrox side.

Missing out on the likes of Joey Veerman and Oscar Gloukh were big mistakes made by Giovanni van Bronckhorst during his spell in charge of the Light Blues, and they may have kept him in a job for a while longer.

However, missing out on Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi may just have been his biggest transfer error during his spell at the club, especially considering the defensive frailties that are plaguing the Gers of late.

Rangers were looking at signing him up on a free transfer from Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem before the end of last season, yet he ended up choosing to move to Union Berlin instead, and it has since transpired that Van Bronckhorst made a blunder not enticing him to Scotland.

What is Danilho Doekhi up to now?

In response, Rangers shelled out £4m to sign Ben Davies from Liverpool in order to bolster their backline and the jury is still out on the English centre-back.

He struggled with fitness concerns during the start of his Rangers career however he has since formed a duo with Connor Goldson, averaging a Sofascore rating of 6.9, which is a more than an acceptable return.

There have been a few mistakes, however, none more so than the high-profile error in the recent Old Firm derby defeat where he failed to clear to ball in the Rangers box, with that leading to a Celtic goal.

With Doekhi’s current form, he would have been a far better option than Davies, absolutely no doubt about it. The 6 foot 3 centre-back has been instrumental for Union Berlin as they occupy the heights of third place in the Bundesliga, receiving a Sofascore rating of 7/10 for his performances.

This season, the Dutchman has registered more goals (four to zero), won more tackles (18 to 17) and made more interceptions than Davies (22 to 19) while also winning more duels per game (4.7 to 3.6) and clearances per match (3.7 to 2.1) suggesting that he would have been the stronger option at the heart of the Rangers defence.

Those numbers are made all the more impressive by the fact he's achieving them in one of the continent's biggest divisions, an indication that he'd have taken the Premiership by storm.

Doekhi’s former manager, Thomas Letsch lauded the defender during his time at Vitesse, saying: “He already played fantastic last year and this season he has performed at the highest level in every game. Danilho makes almost no mistakes and is an absolute team player, a very calm player."

With that in mind, it appears as though the Glasgow side have made a huge mistake in missing out on the Dutchman, and it is only now that they are beginning to realise that he could have made a huge difference to their starting XI.

Liverpool are keen to bring in a new right-back in the summer as they aim to provide Jurgen Klopp with some upgrades for the new campaign.

Do Liverpool need a new right-back?

The 2022/23 campaign has been one to forget so far for the Reds with their usual title charge put on hold with their struggles seeing them fight for a spot inside the top four.

It has been a turbulent campaign for Liverpool and ending the campaign inside the Champions League spots will still be a huge challenge with a nine-point gap to Newcastle United.

Liverpool's defence has come under criticism this season with the likes of Virgil van Dijk coming under fire for his displays throughout the campaign.

Another player who has been heavily criticised is Trent Alexander-Arnold with the right-back also being slammed continuously within the media.

And it seems as if the £180k-per-week ace could potentially be in line to be replaced over the coming months with Fabrizio Romano alluding to a possible new right-back coming in on his Here We Go podcast:

(14:20) "Then for a new full-back. I'm told that Liverpool are exploring the full-backs market and so this is a possibility."

(36:10) "Also the full-backs because I think they could go for a new right-back, this is the expectation, so this is a possibility."

Could Alexander-Arnold play in central midfield?

Alexander-Arnold has been a player who has received a lot of criticism this season for his defensive ability in the right-back role.

Just last month, Jamie Carragher spoke about the 24-year-old's displays this season and has even suggested he is unlikely to improve at this stage of his career:

"We all know his defending isn't good enough. I don't think it will ever be good enough. We're talking about a player who's played 260 games. It's not going to massively improve… They've got to go and buy a right-back," he said.

And he raises the notion that potentially Alexander-Arnold has actually grown too comfortable in his role at Anfield with no real competition for his spot at right-back.

This could possibly be the case with the prospect of a new right-back could send a message to the England international that his displays need to improve or he will be replaced in the starting XI.

However, there is also a suggestion that perhaps the 24-year-old could excel in a central midfield role with his passing ability potentially outweighing his defensive skills.

Alexander-Arnold ranks inside the top percentile for progressive passes made among other full-backs and inside the upper second percentile for passes attempted (via FBref).

In comparison to Jordan Henderson (1.12), Alexander-Arnold has (2.20) almost provided more than double the number of key passes this season and has recorded more shot-creating actions (3.72) than the Liverpool captain (2.85) (via FBref).

Liverpool's midfield has also been heavily criticised this season and having reportedly dropped out of the race for Jude Bellingham, maybe they have a possible upgrade already in the side.

West Ham suffered a setback in their quest for Premier League survival as they were defeated 2-1 by Liverpool at the London Stadium.

The Hammers took an early lead when a thunderous Lucas Paqueta strike cannoned into the top corner, but this was quickly cancelled out by a sumptuous long-ranger from Cody Gakpo.

The Irons then fumbled their advantage when an emphatic Joel Matip header secured all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It was a shame for David Moyes’ men, who failed to build upon their resounding 4-0 victory over Bournemouth in their last top-flight outing or distance themselves from the dreaded drop zone.

However, the East London outfit will struggle to have complaints as they were dominated were large periods of the game. The visitors registered 73% possession and had 20 shots, in comparison to West Ham’s seven.

One player who struggled in the face of this Liverpool ascendency was Aaron Cresswell, who largely failed to meaningfully support any attacks.

How did Cresswell perform against Liverpool?

He was unable to combat the effervescent Trent Alexander-Arnold, who shone tremendously in a dual role as right back and inverted full-back.

Conversely, the offensive side of his talent has always been lauded, but this evening it left a lot to be desired. According to Sofascore, Cresswell only recorded a 59% pass completion rate, one key pass, and no successful dribbles, while losing possession a whopping 15 times.

Due to his age and declining form, it would be no surprise if the Hammers' hierarchy decided to ditch the Englishman in the face of an extensive rebuild.

Despite this loss, the Irons still have plenty to play for this season as they have an upcoming Europa Conference League semi-final and still have six crunch games left in the league to mathematically seal their top-flight status for next season.

Wrexham secured a historic promotion to the Football League for the first time in 15 years last Saturday.
