Arsenal ace hints at summer West Ham switch

Carl Jenkinson has hinted at a potential full-time switch to West Ham, as reported by talkSPORT.

The right-back is enjoying a successful season-long loan spell with the Hammers this term, and has become something of a fans favourite throughout the campaign.

And with the likes of Hector Bellerin and Mathieu Debuchy seemingly ahead of him in the Emirates Stadium pecking order, reports have linked Jenkinson with a move away from the Gunners this summer, with West Ham thought to be considering a £10million offer.

WANT MORE? >> West Ham transfer news | Arsenal transfer news

And Jenkinson has admitted that he would certainly be open to staying with the Hammers on a permanent basis, and also explained that spending a season on loan in the Premier League has been perfect for his development.

He told Sport magazine: “It’s definitely been the right decision for me.

“It’s been the first time I’ve played regular football week in, week out, and that’s all a footballer really wants to do.”

“But West Ham has been perfect for me, and I’ve loved every minute. It’s definitely a place I’d consider staying, but the ball is in Arsenal’s court.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at West Ham. I also want to play at the highest level I can. I’ve got a massive summer in front of me at the Under-21 European Championship, so my focus isn’t really on where I’m going to be next season.”

And Jenkinson has also been impressed with the Hammers’ new found attacking style of play under Sam Allardyce this season, and admits he still had to fight for his place in the team despite being an Arsenal player.

“I wanted to get into the team here as soon as possible, but just because I came from Arsenal doesn’t mean I have a divine right,” Jenkinson insists.

“West Ham are a big team, so I had to work to get in. The style of play and the way West Ham play in an attacking sense has certainly suited me. I’ve got forward a lot, got a lot of crosses into the box and it has been good.

“I wanted to go to a club where I would be able to express myself and not just be stuck defending in my own box and my own half. I’ve certainly been given the licence to do that.”

Since arriving on loan last summer, the England U21 international has made 26 Premier League appearances for West Ham, registering two assists.

Why this Everton youngster would be crazy to take up Chelsea’s offer

John Stones has been making quite an impression on the Premier League and it now appears that the current Champions, Chelsea, are keen to sign the 20-year-old.

The England international signed for the Merseyside club in 2013 and since then has greatly increased the £3million price tag that they paid for him. Playing alongside fellow international Phil Jagielka has matured him and his confidence has made the youngster one of the most promising starlets on England’s books.

After an assured display against Manchester United where he scored his first Everton goal many have started to look at him as a potential transfer target. Blues boss, Jose Mourinho, rates Stones highly and has expressed that how impressed he is with the 20-year-old’s flexibility (playing at both centre back and right back this season).

In the current campaign he has won 65% of his tackles and headers as well as having a 91% successful pass rate. His statistics match and better some of the best defenders in the Premier League including Chelsea’s own John Terry who has only completed 87% of his passes. His strength and determination to put a tackle in alongside his speed is quickly turning him into the perfect modern centre-back and Mourinho is considering a double swoop for him and teammate Seamus Coleman but while the big lights might be tempting for the 20-year-old he would do well to stay put for now.

Having become Premier League champions, it is only natural that everyone at the club is now looking for a serious challenge for the Champions League. In this season’s competition, the Blues were embarrassed by PSG in a first leg which gave them too much to do.

One of the main reasons they were so successful in the top tier of English football was due to the superb signings in the summer transfer window where they nabbed, among others, PFA Player of the Year Diego Costa. It is expected that the gaffer is looking to sign a few key (and probably expensive) players and if Stones is offered a contract then it would be a tough decision to make. While many expect Stones to become a key player for club and country – hopefully taking over where John Terry has left off – he would be better remaining in Merseyside, at least for another season.

The 20-year-old is still young and still relatively new in the Premier League and while Jose is a superb manager, he will not get the opportunity to play as many games while the Chelsea back-four is so strong, as well as boasting an impressive goal-scoring record – Chelsea’s defenders have been instrumental in winning the Premier League.

The amount of game time a player gets at Stones’ age can make or break the rest of their career. Stones is well loved by Everton fans and while he is continuing to learn and develop under Roberto Martinez and under the guidance of Jagielka there is no need to jump.

Stones time will eventually go to an even bigger club than Everton I have no doubt, but now is not that time.

Five key battles that will decide Man United vs Spurs

After two months of excruciatingly painful withdrawal symptoms, Football Fancast are delighted to announce that we’re now less than 24 hours away from the official opening of the 2015/16 Premier League season!

And the English top flight’s fixture makers have thrown up a fantastic tie to kick things off, with Tottenham Hotspur paying a visit to Old Trafford.

It’s a fixture that always throws up a few surprises and although the Lilywhites claimed their first Premier League away win over Manchester United only three years ago, clashes between the two have been a lot closer since – three draws and one win apiece to be precise.

So with new signings on show, old faces returning to the fray and two managers in Louis van Gaal and Mauricio Pochettino determined to improve upon the impressive platforms they built last season, how will Saturday’s 12.45 kick-off pan out?

Perhaps a look at FIVE key individual battles between the two sides can spread some light on the issue.

WAYNE ROONEY VS TOBY ALDERWEIRELD AND JAN VERTONGHEN

Wayne Rooney’s form has always been a crucial factor in Manchester United’s results but his influence at Old Trafford will be more important than ever next season.

Indeed, with no replacement in sight for now-Fenerbahce star Robin van Persie, the Red Devils skipper will serve as Louis van Gaal’s first-choice centre-forward for next term – in contrast to the last three years, having spent the majority of his time in attacking midfield.

Javier Hernandez and James Wilson don’t exactly form the most convincing of back-up options, so the burden of firing United to their first title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement falls firmly on the 29 year-old’s shoulders.

LVG has already charged him with the task of claiming the Golden Boot – which would likely require Wazza Roo breaching the 20-goal mark for the first time since the 2011/12 season – so he’ll be desperate to dust off those in-front-of-goal cobwebs against Tottenham on Saturday.

He’ll be directly up against Spurs centre-back duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. The former may be a new signing at White Hart Lane, arriving from Atletico at the cost of £11million, but these two have played together countless times before; for both the Belgium international team and former club Ajax, where they lifted three consecutive Eredivisie titles together.

That suggests Alderweireld and Vertonghen will already a strong bond at the heart of defence, so they could turn out to be one of the trickiest partnerships Rooney faces all season.

HARRY KANE VS EXPECTATION

United and Spurs may have spent nearly £100million between them on new recruits this summer but many eyes will be firmly set on a player who didn’t cost the latter club a penny – striking extraordinaire Harry Kane.

The 21 year-old’s whimsical rise was one of the stories of the 2014/15 Premier League season, emerging from the peripheries of the Lilywhites squad to become the division’s top scoring Englishman – which saw him claim the PFA Young Player of the Year award and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

Last season, Kane’s form was fuelled by momentum and the sheer passion shown towards him from the Tottenham fanbase. But follow-up campaigns are always difficult and next season will be the true litmus test of how talented the 6 foot 2 centre-forward, compared to Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham and Thomas Muller to name a few, truly is.

Chris Smalling showed drastic improvements towards the end of last term whilst centre-back partners Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones certainly had their moments.

But a tougher test than who Kane will be pressing up against on Saturday is the sheer level of expectation now surrounding him; not only will many assume of him another 21-goal season, but he’s now a focal point of the Spurs starting Xi and the solitary striker on their books who can be depended on for goals, with flops Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor in reserve.

Rumours linking Manchester United with a ‘huge bid’ for the Lilywhites star adds another interesting subplot that will play on Kane’s mind.

MEMPHIS DEPAY VS KIERAN TRIPPIER/KYLE WALKER

The battle for dominance on one of the flanks could be decided by two new signings on Saturday – Manchester United’s Memphis Depay and Tottenham’s Kieran Tripper.

The Red Devils may have acquired some more coveted names this summer, such as Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, but they devoted £25million to snapping up the former flagship star of the Eredivise and many are resultantly tipping him to be a huge success at Manchester United.

Some have even compared the 21 year-old to a young Cristiano Ronaldo, sharing the three-time Ballon d’Or winner’s mix of pace, power, netting prowess and trickery, as well as his definitive free kick technique. So with such vast expectation, Depay will be keen to impress on his competitive debut for United.

There’s logic to suggest he’ll be up against Kyle Walker on Saturday. He possesses the speed to nullify Depay’s penetrative threat and was rested for Spurs’ final pre-season friendly against AC Milan yesterday evening.

But Kieran Trippier is probably of a closer mould to the kind of full-back Mauricio Pochettino utilised at Southampton, as an earnest, hardworking right-back with strong technique, and the Spurs faithful will want to see their new £3.5million signing in action.

Squaring up against Depay is certainly a tricky task for a competitive debut but the Netherlands international could have his hands full too; Trippier averaged the most accurate crosses of any Premier League player last season (2.4) and the most created chances of any player in the Burnley squad (1.7), so Depay will have to do his fair share of tracking back.

MORGAN Schneiderlin vs CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN

Alongside Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen is one of the three standout talents in the Tottenham squad.

His form was certainly patchy last season but the 23 year-old still managed to record ten goals and two assists in 38 Premier League appearances, whilst his potential to develop into one of the stars of the division is obvious.

The Danish playmaker claimed most of those strikes – including a spate of last minute winners – playing as the Lilywhites’ No.10, having previously served as a left midfielder under Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood, and he seems more than likely to continue in that role next term.

Resultantly, he’s set to be up against Manchester United new boy Morgan Schneiderlin on Saturday, a £24million arrival from Southampton who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most formidable enforcers over the last three campaigns, averaging the second-most tackles per match (3.7) of any player in the top flight during his ultimate season at St. Mary’s.

Famed for his ability to bring control and composure to the base of midfield, the France international has been purchased as a long-term successor to Michael Carrick – and he’ll be desperate to affirm that reputation when facing the England man’s former club on Saturday.

MICHEL VORM VS SERGIO ROMERO

An intriguing battle of the second choice goalkeepers. Whilst Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Hugo Lloris is unlikely to feature for the Lilywhites at Old Trafford after missing the vast majority of pre-season through injury, Louis van Gaal has made the shock declaration that David De Gea will also sit out the 12.45pm kick-off, due to the relentless speculation surrounding his future with the Red Devils.

That means both Spurs and United will be calling upon their reserve goalies for Saturday’s affair, Michel Vorm and Sergio Romero respectively.

Michel Vorm is no Hugo Lloris but he’s a well-proven, experienced Premier League goalkeeper, with 93 top flight outings under his belt from spells with Swansea City and the north Londoners. And having spent the entirety of last season in the Frenchman’s almighty shadow, the 31 year-old will be determined to prove against United that he can don the gloves full time for Tottenham – especially amid recurring rumours that Lloris could be snapped up by Saturday’s opponents should De Gea’s long-awaited Real Madrid move go ahead.

Likewise, Sergio Romero will be keen to silence his doubters. The 28 year-old boasts 62 caps for Argentina and was in great form for the finalists at last summer’s World Cup. But at club level he’s really struggled over the last two campaigns; losing his No.1 status at Sampdoria to former Arsenal loanee Emiliano Viviano and subsequently released by the Serie A outfit at the end of last season.

With the two best shot-stoppers in the Premier League both absent tomorrow, this key battle is essentially a question of who will step up to fill the void. A masterclass from one of the two second-choice ‘keepers could well be the biggest influence on the final result.

Everton fans react to Turan transfer rumour

According to Mundo Deportivo, Everton have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona attacker Arda Turan during the January transfer window.

Turan scored 13 times in all competitions for Barcelona last season, but has not played a single minute of first-team football for the Spanish giants during the 2017-18 campaign.

It is understood that Turan’s agent has approached Everton to make the Merseyside outfit aware of the 30-year-old’s situation at Camp Nou.

Everton fans were asked for their thoughts on the possible deal, and a large number welcomed the news as they want more quality in the final third of the field.

Sam Allardyce has improved the Toffees since arriving, but the team are lacking quality in a number of key areas, and Turan would bring a winning mentality to Goodison Park.

A lot of things would have to fall into place for Turan, who is valued at £10.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, to move to Everton this month, but the club’s supporters are very interested in a deal taking place.

In Focus: Evans can add defensive depth to Arsenal but isn’t a long-term solution

As reported by The Daily Mail, Arsenal have made initial enquiries to West Bromwich Albion about signing their star centre-back Jonny Evans this January.

What’s the story?

One of the key failings of Arsenal’s bid for a top four position in English Premier League this season has been their defensive vulnerability, conceding more goals than all six of the other teams currently in the top seven.

In order to help solve that, it seems Arsene Wenger is ready to add experience to his defensive line with a move for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

The Daily Mail report Arsenal have already made enquiries for the Northern Ireland international, who is rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.

The paper say that the Gunners are in competition with the likes of Manchester City and Everton for the 30-year-old’s signature.

Is he the kind of signing that can help turn around Arsenal’s faltering defence?

Is he the answer?

It’s fair to say Jonny Evans wouldn’t be the most fashionable of signings this January if he makes the switch to the Emirates.

In a transfer market where value is placed on youth and potential, it would be out of the ordinary for Wenger to make a move for a veteran Northern Irish defender.

However unfashionable he may be, Evans is a functional, accomplished defender and with over 225 Premier League appearances to his name is one of the most experienced in the top flight.

He may not be a long-term solution to Arsenal’s woes but while they search for the next elite, young defender, in the short-term Evans can undoubtedly do a job for the Gunners, offering the kind of grit and determination that is currently lacking in their defensive set-up.

Arsene Wenger’s Christmas Carol: The painful Sunday that epitomised Arsenal’s stasis

Arsene Wenger and Ebenezer Scrooge are far from kindred spirits. For all the angst Wenger receives from Arsenal’s own supporters and the wider world, there is a relentless optimism about the Frenchman; a belief that his footballing ideals are still the purest and most righteous and that eventually, an underlying sense of karma intertwined the the beautiful game will soon restore him and the club he loves to their former glories.

But there is a debate over whether that qualifies as naivety or stubbornness in football’s increasingly corporate, increasingly money-driven modern age, and if the most accurate answer is the latter, that is where Wenger and Scrooge share a fatal flaw.

And just as a fictional Christmas Eve where haunting ghosts from the past, the present and the future visited Charles Dickens’ famous character to correct the errors of his ways, the three directions of time visited Wenger on Sunday too, in a poignantly telling afternoon for a club that finds itself in painfully dire straits.

The first period of time was the present, ironically presented by Wenger himself prior to the 1.30pm kickoff with Bournemouth. Le Professeur revealed in his pre-match interview that there would be a resolution on Alexis Sanchez’s future within 48 hours – coincidentally, shortly after news of Manchester United bidding for the wantaway Chilean had spread across the British press.

Six years after begrudgingly selling a key player to Manchester United because of an unresolved contract situation, that time Robin van Persie, Wenger finds himself strengthening a divisional rival with one of the best attacking players in world football once again. And nine months after insisting Sanchez wouldn’t be sold to another English team, Wenger finds himself reneging on that promise.

“I don’t think that you would sell him to any Premier League club, that is for sure. Why would you sell him to another [Premier League] club? You want to be as strong as you can be, and not strengthen the other teams.”

If the present was difficult for Wenger to stomach though, as Scrooge once discovered while watching friends and relatives mock his very name, the Frenchman’s glimpse into the future was something else altogether – a rudderless 2-1 loss to a relegation-threatened side in the absence of Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. It must be said that there was nothing hugely exceptional about the defeat at the Vitality Stadium; Arsenal have lost more games than they’ve won on the road in the Premier League this season, dropping twelve points to clubs lower than them in the table in the process.

And yet, there was something uniquely drab about an Arsenal performance with neither Sanchez nor Ozil in the team, a situation that could well become permanent before the close of the transfer window if the rumour mongers are to be believed. The Gunners could only produce three shots on target against a side just one point clear of relegation pre-kickoff and their goal in the 2-1 defeat owed more to a fluffed save from Asmir Begovic than their own attacking quality as Hector Bellerin’s shot slipped under the Bosnian international.

Arsenal looked decisively ordinary without their two talismanic entities and were the north London club to lose one or both come the end of the month, it’s hard to imagine them producing the kind of inspiring attacking performance Arsenal have become synonymous with under Wenger during the rest of the season. With the contract of Sunday’s best performer, Jack Wilshere, due to expire as well, Arsenal’s immediate future is an incredibly bleak one; one without undisputed top-class players, one without any real focal points in the final third, and one without what has been Wenger’s redeeming saving grace amid his club’s relentless slump – the exciting brand of football.

Then, finally, came a moment from Arsenal’s past that put into perspective how far the north Londoners have fallen. On paper, Liverpool beating Manchester City to solidify their top four credentials is an abysmal result for Arsenal, and certainly one not worth celebrating.

Yet, amid a weekend in which Wenger effectively announced Sanchez’s departure to a divisional rival and Arsenal were once again humbled away from home by considerably lesser opposition, this time in the absence of their two most important players, the confirmation of the Invincibles as the only undefeated team in Premier League history was the single silver lining. Arsenal have reached a point where their only solace is clinging onto former glories. That’s an almighty distance to fall in the 14 seasons since Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and co did something unprecedented.

In this Dickensian analogy though, the difference between fiction and reality is a disturbing one for Arsenal. When Scrooge awoke on Christmas morning, he was allowed to start anew. It was something more than disturbing dream, yet in actual terms no more serious – the world was as quick to embrace the new, enlightened, optimistic Scrooge as he was the world.

In actuality, Wenger isn’t so lucky; the events unfolding are undoubtedly real rather than the consequence, as Scrooge puts it, of ‘an undigested bit of beef’. And much unlike Scrooge, the damage caused, especially since the start of last season, is verging upon irreversible.

A painful Sunday that combined the past, the present and the future makes it hard to see where Arsenal and their under-fire manager can possibly go from here. The only logical answer is further down.

HYS: Should Southampton sack Pellegrino and hire Silva?

It’s safe to say Mauricio Pellegrino hasn’t exactly hit the ground running at Southampton. Supporters became frustrated with Claude Puel last season but his replacement has proved the grass isn’t always greener, Saints plummeting all the way into the relegation zone after drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

Inevitably, that puts Pellegrino at the front of the queue in the sack race and unsurprisingly, there are already rumours claiming he could soon be replaced by Marco Silva, who was unexpectedly dismissed by Watford on Sunday.

The 40-year-old Portuguese, who measures in at 5 foot 11, has impressed during his time in the Premier League, despite Hull City suffering relegation and Watford parting with him after just 26 games in charge. His attractive style of football has particularly stood out, and would certainly win over disillusioned Southampton fans.

So, Saints supporters, is it time to sack Pellegrino and replace him with the former Olympiacos boss? Let us know by voting below…

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Mason’s early retirement

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been sending their best wishes via Twitter to their former player Ryan Mason, who has been forced to retire from football at the age of 26.

The midfielder announced in a statement that he has been advised by medical professionals not to return to competitive action due to a serious head injury.

Mason suffered a fractured skull during a collision of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill while playing for Hull City in January 2017.

The injury was operated on immediately and since then, the midfielder has been working his way back to health.

Mason had hoped to play competitively again but he has since learned that there would be too much of a risk if he did so.

The Englishman, who earned one cap for his country, came through the ranks at Tottenham.

After graduating from the academy, Mason had various loan spells, including stints at Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall, Lorient and Swindon Town.

After failing to land a regular spot in Spurs’ first team, Mason left in 2016 to join Hull.

Tottenham fans have always been fond of the midfielder, and they were quick to react on Twitter when he announced his retirement.

Revealed: 41% of Celtic fans think Ntcham could be a bigger hit than Dembele in the Premier League

Practically since first moving to Celtic from Fulham, Moussa Dembele has been discussed as a future star striker of the Premier League, the previous successes of Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama after leaving the Scottish champions for the English top flight only making that predicted transition seem all the more inevitable.

But Dembele is by no means the only promising youngster at Celtic. Olivier Ntcham has proved to be a strong signing since Brendan Rodgers snapped him up from Manchester City last summer in a £4.5million deal, going on to bag seven goals and five assists across all competitions, and at the age of 22 the potential is there for further improvement.

Likewise, boasting an abundance of power and energy, the 5 foot 9 midfielder seems like a natural fit for the rigours of Premier League football. So with Dembele struggling for form recently, netting just once since the start of December, we asked Celtic fans last week to vote for which young Frenchman would be the bigger hit over in the English top flight.

And while 59% still back Dembele to make a bigger impact, our poll proved much closer than expected, with 41% believing Ntcham would be a greater success should he return to the Premier League after leaving the champions-in-waiting back in July.

What kind of price-tag would you place on Ntcham, Celtic fans? Let us know by commenting below…

West Ham fans are not happy with Cresswell form

The West Ham United fans are an extremely frustrated bunch at the moment.

There have been some brilliant highs since David Moyes replaced Slaven Bilic as head coach, but there have also been plenty of lows.

The Hammers have lost their last two Premier League matches 4-1 – including away to fellow relegation candidates Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

A number of players are currently struggling to find their best form, and the West Ham fans have revealed their displeasure with Aaron Cresswell’s performance levels.

The 28-year-old has made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers this season, but has struggled to put together any sort of consistency when it comes to his form.

That said, Cresswell, who is believed to pick up £50,000 a week at the London Stadium, has managed six assists from left-back, and there are certainly more guilty parties when it comes to shirking responsibility.
