An ideal partnership for Arsenal to consider?

The next few years will be crucial for Arsenal. Towards the end of next season the club will be much clearer on who is going to be in the dugout as manager for the next few years, and also where they stand with regards to new sponsorship deals. Kit suppliers and sponsors are the big ones coming up for renewal, and any movement on those—positive or negative—will be judged in accordance with the move to the Emirates Stadium.

The order of the day is greater streams of revenue; Arsenal are clearly not happy with the current revenue streams, yet they were absolutely necessary for the move away from Highbury. Adding to the new and hopefully impressive sponsorships for the club, it may also be worth looking into the benefits of a partnership with another club abroad.

Make no mistake, this is very much a suggestion for Arsenal to remain in the higher seat of power in any new partnership with another club. Arsenal have paired with the Colorado Rapids in the MLS and have also worked closely with clubs in Spain, albeit very small clubs. The team have travelled to the Far East in both of the last two summers, clearly looking to reap the benefits of the club’s popularity and reputation around the world. What we’re seeing here is an acknowledgement of avenues that can be exploited for the benefit of the club, so why not a partnership similar to Tottenham and Real Madrid’s?

Once again, it’s worth pointing out that I’m not leaning towards a pairing with a club like Barcelona or AC Milan where Arsenal would clearly be the smaller of the two. Instead, Arsenal should perhaps look at smaller clubs around Europe who are competing in the top-flight to further the growth on a number of fronts.

Arsene Wenger has always been very particular about where his young players go on loan. He looks at the management in place, the style of football and how much exposure to the first-team the player will have. Perhaps teams from Holland, Portugal and even Spain would represent promising opportunities for a long-term partnership. Like Spurs and Real Madrid, the clubs could look to benefit from the quality of training in both countries, with the younger players exposed to different levels of competition and methods. Not only would Arsenal benefit, but it would be a benefit for the English national team if younger players were treated to cultures that differed from what they’re used to in this country.

As always, the need to make money as one of the top priorities for a club like Arsenal, and even those on the other end of the partnership. Arsenal would see their reputation grow and hopefully see a surge in merchandise sales. The other important factor is the revenue received from summer friendlies between the two sides. The size of the Emirates Stadium and the interest surrounding Arsenal’s summer activity would be a huge bonus to both clubs.

Perhaps it’s worth looking at Tottenham from a viewpoint that they’ve potentially started a trend of successful partnerships for the future. Of course, it’s very easy to look at their deal with Real Madrid as one that simply sees the Gareth Bales and Kyle Walkers swapping White Hart Lane for the Bernabeu with very little coming Tottenham’s way. It’s a fair assessment and probably not entirely wide of the truth. But would Daniel Levy put his club is such a weak position in European football, especially considering the great strides he’s taking to establish Tottenham as a regular in the Champions League.

Arsenal have noticeably had trouble moving on a number of players on loan over recent summers, with very few clubs looking to take the risk on the Gunners’ outcasts. But sending them away to a club with close ties to Arsene Wenger’s side means both sides would benefit: Arsenal pay the majority of the wages while getting players out of the squad and into regular first-team football.

Carroll lauds Everton ace Doucoure v City

Sam Carroll has praised the performance of Abdoualye Doucoure despite Everton losing 1-0 at home to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Unlucky to lose

The Toffees were certainly unlucky to lose the game against the reigning champions, who scored with just a few minutes to go after Phil Foden tapped home, which was followed by a controversial decision from VAR not to award the home side a penalty after a handball in the box by Rodri.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-2/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Nonetheless, Frank Lampard’s team gave a good account of themselves against quality opposition, and there were many standout performers for his side on the night.

The Latest: Doucoure lauded

Taking to Twitter, The Liverpool Echo journalist Carroll was lauding the performance of Doucoure in particular, along with a few of his Everton team-mates.

The reporter gushed: “Doucoure has superhuman energy levels. Him and Richarlison superb.”

The Verdict: What a return

After just coming back from injury, Doucoure really put in a shift against City.

The central midfielder won four of his duels and also completed one successful dribble, two clearances, two tackles and one key pass, maintaining an 83% pass accuracy and having 54 touches of the ball in total, the second-most out of any of his team-mates (SofaScore).

He is certainly likely to be a key player for Lampard from now until the end of the season if the Toffees are to avoid relegation.

Tottenham transfer news on Christensen

A reporter for Sky Sports has now revealed some big transfer news on Tottenham Hotspur target Andreas Christensen.

The Lowdown: In contact

It has widely been reported that Spurs are in contact with Christensen’s agents ahead of a potential move in the summer, given that his current contract at Chelsea expires at the end of June.

FC Barcelona seem to be the favourites for his signature at this moment in time, but while he has not put pen to paper on a deal with them, the Lilywhites can still count themselves in the race.

The Latest: No final decision

As per Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, there is ‘no final decision’ being made by Christensen yet about where he would like to move to, including Barca, although this is of course subject to change:

“Update Christensen: Close sources to the player say that there is still no final decision. So no final “yes” to FC Barcelona at the moment. But this can change at any time.”

The Verdict: Get it done

With Barcelona lurking, the North London club need to make sure that they get this deal done ahead of them.

Currently rated at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, to get a player of Christensen’s quality and calibre on a free is a no-brainer, and of course someone who has played in a back-three under Antonio Conte himself, he would slot straight in at Hotspur Way.

The biggest difficulty THFC may have is persuading the Denmark international to jump to Chelsea’s bitter rivals, but if they can offer a suitable financial package, they should have a chance of landing his services for next season.

Leeds: Phil Hay provides Junior Firpo injury update

Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo is set for a long spell on the sidelines after injuring his knee against Aston Villa, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Firpo injured in defeat

The Whites were beaten 3-0 at home by Steven Gerrard’s men on Thursday evening, in what was a hugely disappointing first game at Elland Road for Jesse Marsch.

It was a result that leaves Leeds deeper in the relegation mire, with both Burnley and Everton having games in hands around them.

Firpo was injured late in the day against Villa, with a stretcher required for the 25-year-old, and now more bad news has been revealed as Hay shared the initial diagnosis.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Hay gives negative update

Taking to Twitter, the journalist claimed that Firpo picked up a bad knee injury and that a prolonged spell on the sidelines now awaits him, implying he will definitely miss Sunday’s clash with Norwich:

“No precise diagnosis on Firpo yet but he’s injured his knee and Marsch’s thinks he’s probably looking at a lengthy spell out.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-37/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Sums up his season

Firpo was having a poor night as it was, not covering himself in glory for Matty Cash’s goal, and his injury rather epitomises his first season as a Leeds player.

He has rarely convinced defensively, when fit, and his supposed attacking prowess has also been lacking, with no goals and just one assist coming his way in 19 Premier League appearances.

The hope was that Firpo would be an upgrade on Ezgjan Alioski but that hasn’t proved to be the case – hopefully he returns from this lengthy absence a different player.

Aston Villa: Preece hits out at Leon Bailey

Aston Villa correspondent Ashley Preece believed that Leon Bailey wasn’t strong enough for his involvement in West Ham’s second goal in his team’s 2-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Bailey’s performance

Steven Gerrard brought on the winger shortly before the hosts went 1-0 up with 20 minutes to go through Andriy Yarmolenko. The Jamaican is yet to start a game this year due to injury but looked bright in the closing stages in east London.

As per SofaScore, the 24-year-old ended with a match rating of 7.3/10, creating one big chance, completing 100% of his dribbles and recording seven accurate passes.

However, with Villa looking to get back into the game, Bailey lost out to Declan Rice following John McGinn’s attempted pass, with Pablo Fornals doubling the hosts’ lead.

The Latest: Preece’s post on Bailey

Preece relayed the key moments from the London Stadium via Twitter on Sunday afternoon and believed that Bailey was ‘not strong enough’ in the build-up to the second West Ham goal.

He tweeted: “Goal, West Ham, Fornals! Leon Bailey not strong enough to receive McGinn’s pass as Rice nicks in, drives forward, plays Benrahma who checks it back to Fonals who fires home. Villa done on the break. Clinical from the hosts.”

The Verdict: Hard done by?

Villa came into Sunday’s clash in fine form, winning their previous three games without conceding, and Gerrard may feel that his side should have taken something from the capital today.

The visitors had more efforts on goal, a greater share of possession and also hit the woodwork, as per SofaScore, with Bailey helping towards those stats with his all-action display upon coming off the bench.

Unfortunately, Gerrard’s side have nothing to show for it, and they’ll be looking to put that right next time out against Arsenal, where we may see another cameo from the bench from Bailey – or possibly even from the start.

WBA could unearth next Bartley with Taylor

West Brom have had a mixed season in the Championship so far, having started with Valerien Ismael in charge, the Baggies now have former Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce at the helm to see out the remainder of the campaign as strongly as possible.

With 37 league games played, the Midlands club have won 14, drawn 11 and lost 12, highlighting just how unpredictable they’ve been over the past months.

One player that has been a prominent figure for the Baggies this season is defender Kyle Bartley, who has appeared in 33 league games and earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.1, making him the second-highest rated player in Bruce’s squad according to WhoScored.

Despite being such a regular player for his side, the 30-year-old is the oldest defender at the Hawthorns, meaning that he may not have too many years left at the club in terms of being a first-choice pick for the team.

With that in mind, Bruce may already have his ideal long-term replacement for Bartley in his ranks at the moment with 19-year-old defender Caleb Taylor.

As a product of West Brom’s youth academy, the teenager has made 59 appearances combined for their U18 and U23 sides as well as two first-team appearances, both of which coming in cup competitions.

In the disheartening 6-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup back in August, the youngster managed to show what he can do at the back, despite conceding so many goals.

With 82 minutes under his belt against the Gunners, Taylor made two tackles, two interceptions and three clearances as well as winning four of the five duels he was involved in.

Labelled as a player that is “vocal, focused and leads by example with the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch” by the club’s U18 coach Peter Gilbert, these sorts of attributes could make the youngster a suitable long-term heir for Bartley, who has also been praised in the past for being a “good talker and a good leader” by former Baggies boss Sam Allardyce.

Even though the youngster hasn’t been included in any matchday squads since January, Bruce should definitely start getting Taylor more involved in the senior side to see if he has what it takes to eventually become a regular first-team player for his club.

Archer withdraws from England U20 squad

Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer has withdrawn from England’s under-20 squad, as per LancsLive.

The Lowdown: Archer on loan at Preston

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a fine first season at senior level, scoring four times in five senior Villa appearances before the January transfer window.

Villa then decided to loan him out to Championship side Preston North End, where he has continued to score with relative ease. The forward, who was labelled ‘fantastic’ by Lilywhites boss Ryan Lowe, has netted five times in 12 Championship appearances at Deepdale.

That form earned Archer a call up to England’s under-20 squad to take on Poland and Germany, but he has now pulled out of Andy Edwards’ 22-man panel.

The Latest: Illness for Archer

As reported by LancsLive’s George Hodgson, Archer has withdrawn from the young Three Lions squad due to illness.

They relayed the news from Preston North End’s official website, which didn’t specify whether the illness was related to the global pandemic.

The Verdict: Unfortunate

This latest update is extremely unfortunate for the Villa forward, who was set to be rewarded on the international stage for his fine displays at club level.

It will be a worry for both Villa and Preston chiefs as well, but hopefully Archer will be able to make a swift return following the international break.

Preston’s next game is a trip to Derby County on April 2, so fingers crossed that the 20-year-old will keep up his record of featuring in every game for the Lilywhites since joining them towards the end of January.

Newcastle must unleash Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United travel away to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League today as they look to bounce back from successive defeats.

The Magpies lost to Chelsea and Everton, both by a 1-0 scoreline, prior to the international break and now have the opportunity to get back to winning ways in the top-flight.

Eddie Howe may look to change up his team in order to avoid a third defeat in a row and one change he will be able to make is the return of Jonjo Shelvey, with the midfielder back in training after dealing with an illness.

Ahead of the match, the head coach spoke about his options in the middle of the park, saying: “Midfield has been a key area for us. We’ve had a really good mixture of technical & physical quality. If we decide to play with three, I need to pick which three & it’s a difficult choice but nice one to have.”

Unleash him

Howe must now unleash Shelvey in midfield against Tottenham as he is a crucial player for the Toon and will be key to their chances of picking up all three points.

The ex-Liverpool man was absent against Chelsea and Everton as both games ended in defeat for the Magpies. They missed his guile in the number eight role, with the club’s form before those losses highlighting his influence.

Prior to those games, he was one of only two outfield players – along with Fabian Schar – to play every single minute of the exceptional nine-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

The £70k-per-week gem averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 7.01 across those nine matches. This shows that he was consistently delivering quality performances to help the team on the pitch, as he played a key role in the unbeaten stretch.

Issac Hayden dubbed him a “Rolls Royce” of a player last month and Matt Ritchie once claimed that he “could play for Barcelona”, which illustrates how highly he is rated by his peers.

His displays on the pitch have been deserving of praise as he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.91 in the top-flight this term – a score only Allan Saint-Maximin can better out of the players who have been at the club since the summer.

His passing will be important to Howe’s side against Tottenham if Antonio Conte’s side look to dominate the match as he has the ability to hit long balls on the counter-attack.

He has completed 61% of his long passing this term, making 4.9 per game, and can use his quality on the ball to set the likes of Ryan Fraser and Saint-Maximin away in space if Spurs press up high and leave space in behind. This is why Howe must unleash him from the start today.

Liverpool now considering £70m deal to sign out and out striker instead of Semenyo

Liverpool have now set their sights on signing a £70m replacement for the injured Alexander Isak next month, according to recent reports.

Slot slams "reckless" Van de Ven challenge

When your luck is out, it is out and Isak’s luck is running on empty. Liverpool’s record signing emerged from the bench against Tottenham Hotspur to finally link-up with fellow big-money buy Florian Wirtz and open the scoring for the Reds.

It’s the type of goal that Liverpool would have been dreaming of all summer after their spending spree. What happened next, however, was an absolute nightmare.

Liverpool hold talks over move for £80m star who Klopp called "world-class"

The Reds could be presented with the opportunity to sign a new forward…

ByDominic Lund

Despite finding the back of the net, Isak couldn’t wheel away in celebration. Instead, he could only put his head in his hands and contemplate the next few months on the sidelines, courtesy of Micky van de Ven’s challenge.

The Tottenham defender’s desperate lunge fractured Isak’s leg and the forward will now be out for an extended period of time, disrupting what has already been a frustrating first first months at Anfield even further.

Arne Slot didn’t hold back when delivering his verdict on Van de Ven’s challenge, either. The Dutchman told reporters: “It’s going to be a long injury, for a couple of months. It’s a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us.

“This was, for me, a reckless challenge. I’ve said a lot about the tackle of Xavi Simons (who was sent off dragging his studs down the calf of Virgil van Dijk) which for me was completely unintentional.”

Now, Liverpool’s attacking options down to a select few with Cody Gakpo also injured and Mohamed Salah at AFCON. As such, the hunt for reinforcements has reportedly seen Antoine Semenyo catch the eye as well as one more Premier League attacker.

Liverpool now eyeing Igor Thiago move

As reported by Caught Offside, Liverpool are also eyeing a move to sign Igor Thiago in the January transfer window, who could be an alternative to Bournemouth’s star winger.

The Brazilian has enjoyed an electric first-half of the season, scoring 11 Premier League goals in 17 appearances to attract interest from Spurs and now Liverpool.

He won’t come cheap, though. Recent reports have claimed that Thiago could cost as much as £70m if Brentford get their way next month. After already losing Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in the summer, it seems like the Bees are desperate to keep hold of their latest impressive forward.

The question that Liverpool must, therefore, ask themselves is whether they should spend big on Thiago or Semenyo. The latter is likely to be at the centre of the biggest January saga, given his £65m release clause, but would not be the out-and-out forward that the Reds need to replace Isak.

Thiago, albeit at a steep price, would instantly replace the Swede whilst he watches on from the sidelines in the hope of finally getting back to his best once back fit.

He can get Sesko firing: Man Utd making calls to sign £100m star

Manchester United’s heavy spending in the transfer market has been there for all to see in recent history, with huge funds being dropped on players who have failed to make the grade.

Ruben Amorim has already spent upwards of £200m since his appointment last November, adding to the £600m splashed by Erik ten Hag in just over two years.

The £800m spent has been wasted on countless players not at the level required for success in the Premier League, which has often resulted in numerous huge losses on various players.

As a result, it’s unclear how much the manager will have available to spend in the winter window, but it hasn’t stopped numerous top talents from appearing on their radar.

The January window could be make or break for the manager, with the 40-year-old needing to make full use of whatever funds he’s handed by the Red Devils hierarchy.

United make contact to sign PL superstar

Over the last couple of days, United have been in constant talks with Bournemouth over a deal to land Antoine Semenyo in January, with Amorim’s men looking to jump the queue for his signature.

The Ghanaian winger currently has a £65m release clause within his contract at the Vitality, but certain sides will have to act quickly, with such a clause ending on January 10th.

If the Red Devils are to complete any transfer for the 25-year-old this winter, they will likely have to fend off interest from rivals Manchester City, who are also keen on a move for his signature.

Semenyo isn’t the only Premier League star currently in their sights for January, with Nottingham Forest sensation Elliot Anderson another player being considered by the board.

According to David Ornstein, the Red Devils have already reached out to Sean Dyche’s side over a potential move for the 23-year-old who’s started every league game this campaign.

He also states the England international is the club’s top target at present, with the youngster seen as the perfect immediate and long-term solution to their midfield issues.

Ornstein stated: “We’re talking the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, plenty of others will be in the frame as well. I think some of them already calling Nottingham Forest, Manchester United have made their interest known. I think he’s top of their list, or there, or there abouts for a number six come this summer.”

Why Anderson would finally get Sesko firing at United

As part of Amorim’s recent shopping spree at United, he oversaw the completion of Benjamin Sesko’s arrival from German side RB Leipzig for a reported £74m.

Given the fee, the Red Devils fans were no doubt excited at the prospect of finding their leading talisman, but it’s safe to say the move has failed to take off as yet.

The Slovenian international has only netted two league goals out of his first 13 appearances, subsequently struggling to adapt to the demands of England’s top-flight.

He will certainly need time to get used to Amorim’s system, but any struggles could be eased if they complete a transfer to sign Anderson in the January window.

The English star may well be a box-to-box midfielder, but it’s his all-round game which could aid the 22-year-old with his efforts in front of goal in the final third.

His underlying stats showcase his talents at both ends, which could hand the manager the long-term fix to such an issue, which has often plagued him in 2025/26.

Anderson, who’s been dubbed “world-class” by one journalist, has completed 1.2 dribbles to date, whilst also winning 7.3 duels per 90 – showcasing his box-to-box talents – but also placing him in the top 5% of midfielders in the league.

However, it’s his efforts in possession that could hugely benefit Sesko at Old Trafford, with Anderson averaging a total of 8.4 progressive passes and 8.1 passes into the final third per 90.

Such numbers showcase the midfielder’s incredible ability at playing the ball into forward areas, which could see the Slovenian be the beneficiary of countless chances in front of goal.

To put Anderson’s numbers into context, he’s currently playing more forward passes than 95% of other midfielders in the league – a phenomenal feat for a deep-lying option.

Whilst he would reportedly cost around the £100m mark, a deal for the Forest star would certainly provide an immediate solution to the problems at the heart of the United midfield.

His creativity is certainly an added bonus, with such numbers only going to improve Sesko’s chances of success during his own time at the Theatre of Dreams.
