Talks held: Man Utd lead race for gem "among best in country" over Man City

Manchester United are now believed to be leading the race to sign a hugely young prospect, with the Red Devils ahead of rivals Manchester City in the battle to snap him up.

Mbeumo likes Man Utd player's post

Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as a priority target for United this summer, with the Brentford ace standing out as one of the best right-sided players in the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, current Bees director of football, Phil Giles, has openly admitted that there is a “significant” amount of interest in the Cameroonian attacker.

“There is significant interest in Bryan. His current preference has been well publicised. He had an unbelievable season, and we expected interest in him. From what I understand, he is also, if needs be, happy to stay at Brentford next year as well. We’ve spoken to Bryan and his representatives. It’s not a given that he’s going to depart this summer. If we get the right offer, there is the potential for a deal to be done, but there is only so much we can say now on that.”

Now, Mbeumo has further stoked the fires ahead of a potential move to United this summer, liking a photo posted by centre-back Leny Yoro on Instagram.

Elsewhere, it looks as though the Red Devils are also looking at the long-term picture, with a new young talent backed to head to Old Trafford.

Man Utd leading race to sign young midfielder

According to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell on X, Manchester United are in pole position to sign Fulham teenager Seth Ridgeon this summer, with talks taking place over a move for him and Tyrese Noubissie “seen as among best in country”.

“MUFC in talks to sign two 16-year-old midfielders seen as among best in country: Seth Ridgeon from Fulham + Tyrese Noubissie from Man City. Competition for both, who have been invited to facilities by academy staff, but United making good proposals.”

In his story for The Athletic, Whitwell adds that ‘United are believed to lead the race should Ridgeon leave Craven Cottage’ ahead of the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool. While many United supporters will be focusing on the club bringing in players who could be immediate starters next season, this update is exciting in its own right.

The Red Devils should always be looking to snap up the most eye-catching homegrown talent, as they have throughout history, bringing in Wayne Rooney as a teenager, for example.

Ridgeon, 16, is a potentially special talent, being capped by England at both Under-16 and Under-17 level, and beating City to his signature could feel like a major coup.

United have fallen down the pecking order in recent years, having been at the top of the football tree for so long in the 1990s and 2000s, but signing the best teenagers around would be a positive step in the right direction.

Sunderland also submit enquiry for £17m starlet alongside Granit Xhaka deal

Sunderland are now reportedly part of a seven-club battle to sign a huge young talent this summer, with six other English clubs also in the mix to snap him up.

Sunderland agree move for Xhaka

The Black Cats are edging closer to their return to the Premier League, with their opening clash at home to West Ham now less than three weeks away, arriving on August 16th.

Regis Le Bris is still eyeing important summer transfer business for Sunderland, with more quality required within his squad, and Granit Xhaka is now on the verge of joining from Bayer Leverkusen, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie. The Swiss will join on a three-year deal, arriving for an initial fee of £13m, with a total of £4.3m in add-ons for the former Arsenal midfielder.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats are also thought to be pushing to sign Galatasaray forward Nicolo Zaniolo, with the Italian earning some Premier League experience on loan at Aston Villa in the past.

New attacking signings appear to be the order of the day for Sunderland after Xhaka is signed, and now a young player with a potentially big future ahead of him has been linked with a switch to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland make contact with England international

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Sunderland have “enquired” about the availability of young Metz striker Idrissa Gueye, who is valued at £17m by his current club.

The Black Cats are far from the only club in the race to bring in the 18-year-old, however, with Liverpool, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Southampton and Ipswich Town all mentioned as potential suitors.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Gueye is described as “one of the hottest properties in Europe” in the report, so Sunderland beating the other six clubs to his signature, among others dotted around Europe, would be a real statement of intent by the Premier League newcomers.

The Metz ace has already scored five goals in 20 appearances for the French outfit at senior level, not to mention already winning one cap for Senegal at international level at a tender age.

Gueye wouldn’t necessarily arrive at Sunderland as a more polished attacking player like Zaniolo, but he would be seen as a footballer with a high ceiling who could grow into something special over time.

Sunderland make £13m bid to sign "goal machine" and want deal done ASAP

The Black Cats have included a buy-back clause.

ByCharlie Smith Jul 28, 2025

Admittedly, £17m is a lot to pay for a player who is still only 18 years of age, but if the Black Cats see him as someone who can become a superstar at the Stadium of Light eventually, he could be worth every penny.

Mandhana: 'We are still better than what we have been playing'

Mandhana revealed that there’s no fixed batter for the No. 3 spot, and the candidate would be chosen based on conditions and match situation

Shashank Kishore08-Oct-2024The chatter surrounding India’s No. 3 slot has taken another twist, with Smriti Mandhana saying that the batter will be chosen based on the conditions and match situation.”The wicket condition and ground conditions are a lot different to what we thought when we came here,” Mandhana, India’s vice-captain, said on Tuesday. “It just depends on the match situation, who we are playing, how the wicket is playing, and what score we are chasing as well. I think that also is a big consideration. I wouldn’t say that it was all planned.”Head coach Amol Muzumdar had all but confirmed prior to India’s women’s T20 World Cup opener that Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, was the chosen one for the key position.Related

India need to get out of second gear, now

Reddy, willing and able

Harmanpreet, who has been cleared of any major injury after leaving the field with a neck sprain in India’s previous game, batted at No. 3 in both the warm-ups as well as in the opening game against New Zealand. On Sunday, against Pakistan, India sent in Jemimah Rodrigues in a chase of 106 after a slow start. Harmanpreet slotted in at No. 4. Of the players in the squad, Yastika Bhatia is another option for the spot.Mandhana suggested that while conditions in the UAE have been challenging, the difference between batting in an afternoon game (vs Pakistan) and an evening game (vs New Zealand) wasn’t all that much, especially with dew yet to become a massive factor.”Except the New Zealand match, we haven’t seen any team go over 140 in the whole tournament – 135-140 – be it a day game or a night game. It says a lot about the conditions,” she said, prior to the start of Australia’s game on Tuesday when they made it to 148. “I wouldn’t say it changes massively in terms of the wicket or the conditions, the outfield especially. Yes, the heat is a lot more.”But yeah, I think [when] we came here, for the first two-three days, we felt a lot hotter, but now I think it’s gotten better. It feels more like Indian conditions now. So it’s not as bad as we thought. Even in the last match, we thought it would be a lot hotter than it was actually when we were playing. I wouldn’t say it changes a lot. Definitely maybe 10 or 15 runs here and there depending on how you bat, but yeah, that’s it.”

“I think the brand of cricket which we want to play, I would say that in the first match we could not do that. Even in the second match, I wouldn’t say we played 100% of our cricket”Smriti Mandhana

India’s cautious approach with the bat against Pakistan, in particular, has led to questions about whether they were even thinking about a possible net run-rate scenario where three teams in their group might be tied on points at the top. Mandhana said points on the board were most important.”That’s the first priority for us,” she said. “I think it’s a balance between trying to find out what’s the best for the team. Of course, in the last match, I started off fine, but then later I consumed a few dot balls, which was a little irritating for me. But yeah, having said that, I think as batters we have to be really smart. We can’t just go out there thinking that we are going to take on this bowling line-up and we are just going to cruise, because of course the conditions and the outfield is a lot different.”So yeah, I think we have to keep that net run-rate in mind, but first is of course winning the match and definitely then going on and thinking about the net run-rate. Of course, the group is definitely a lot tricky. But it’s just the start. I think we don’t want to go ahead thinking a lot about what will happen but one day at a time, and if at all [against Sri Lanka] there’s a place where we think about the net run-rate, of course we’ll be trying to get it first. But I think the win is the priority.”4:48

Takeaways – Reddy, Patil’s performances great signs for India

Before the tournament, it was assumed that the Asian teams would find the conditions in Dubai and Sharjah more to their liking than, say, New Zealand, who beat India handsomely in their contest.”I’m sure the first match didn’t go the way we planned. But, having said that, we won’t shy away from taking that responsibility that we did not step up to play good cricket on that particular day,” Mandhana said. “As a batting order, as a bowling unit, I think we couldn’t do it. We had that one-off bad day where sometimes you just come and want to do everything but you’re not able to get over the line.”Having said that, I don’t think that it’s just the Asian teams that are not able to adjust to the conditions. I’m sure that in the other teams as well, it’s not like they have scored 170-odd.”But yeah, I think the brand of cricket which we want to play, I would say that in the first match we could not do that. Even in the second match, I wouldn’t say we played 100% of our cricket. I’m sure we are still better than what we have been playing. In these conditions, you have to understand your cricket very well, be very smart, and know what shots to play and which shots to play. So I don’t see any difference in Asian teams and other teams.”

IPL 2025 mega auction to be held on November 24, 25 in Jeddah

The event will clash with the third and fourth days of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth

Nagraj Gollapudi05-Nov-2024The IPL 2025 mega auction will be held on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is being held overseas for the second successive year – 2024 was in Dubai – and will clash with the third and fourth days of the first Test between India and Australia in Perth.Unlike regular auctions, the mega auction that takes place every three years is spread over two days instead of just one and it is one of the most-followed events in cricket, as the ten IPL franchises build their squads for the next three years (2025-27).A total of 1574 players (1165 Indian and 409 overseas) had registered for the auction, which will be held at the Abady Al Johar Arena (also known as Benchmark Arena), by the deadline of November 4, the BCCI said. They range from countries like Italy, Canada, Netherlands, Scotland, USA and UAE, apart from the Full Member nations excluding Pakistan. Each franchise can build a squad of up to 25 players, which means that there are 204 slots available at the auction after the retention. On October 31, the deadline for teams to finalise which of their players they were keeping from their 2024 squads, a total of 46 players were retained across the ten franchises. Sunrisers Hyderabad wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen was the most expensive retention at INR 23 crore, while Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants) were joint second at INR 21 crore. But perhaps the highlight of retention day was Mumbai Indians keeping all their big Indian players – Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma – for a total of INR 75 crore. Each team has a total purse of INR 120 crore to build their squads, but following the retention, Punjab Kings have the biggest purse remaining (INR 110.5 crore) to spend at the mega auction, having retained just two uncapped players – Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh – for a total of INR 9.5 crore. Rajasthan Royals have the smallest purse of INR 41 crore after they, along with Kolkata Knight Riders, retained the maximum of six players. KKR will have INR 51 crore to spend at the auction. The IPL has allowed teams to retain up to six players this time – of which a maximum of five can be capped and a maximum of two can be uncapped. The six players can either be retained outright ahead of the auction, or can be bought back using Right-to-Match (RTM) options at the auction, or a combination of both.If a player has been bought by another franchise at the mega auction, the franchise that he was part of in IPL 2024 can step in at the end of the bidding process and buy back their player using the RTM option by matching the highest bid. After that, the franchise that made the winning bid will be given another opportunity to raise the bid to whatever amount they wish. In that case, the player’s previous team will have to match the increased bid to buy back their player.Having retained just two players, PBKS have the most RTM options (four) at the auction. RCB, who retained three players, have three while Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, have two. Five teams – MI, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, SRH and LSG – retained five players each and have just one RTM option at the auction, while RR and KKR have no RTM options. There is of course no limit on the number of players a franchise can buy back if they place the highest bids for them during regular bidding at the auction.

After playing a key role in PSG's Ligue 1 and Champions League success last season, the club fought off interest from Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Chelsea in the summer to ensure he remains a key part of Luis Enrique's project in the French capital. The Parisians don't want to be caught off-guard by offers from other clubs and have thus started negotiations with the player's representatives in hopes of reaching an agreement in the coming months. PSG aim to tie the player to a deal that runs until 2030.

The 23-year-old played 34 Ligue 1 games in the 2024-25 season, in which he scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists. Despite strong performances, he was occasionally benched in big matches, with starters like Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue preferred. This season, Barcola has started all four of PSG's matches and with Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue out injured, he will be even more important over the coming weeks.

PSG condemned the French Football Federation following the injuries to Dembele and Doue sustained during international duty. Both players were sidelined with significant muscle injuries just before key club fixtures. The club expressed frustration over what it described as a "total lack of consultation" from the federation regarding player fitness and scheduling, accusing them of jeopardising PSG’s Champions League and Ligue 1 campaigns.

Leeds now offered chance to sign "sensation" who has scored 38 PL goals

Leeds United are in the market for proven Premier League quality and have now been offered the chance to sign a striker who has previously delivered in the English top-flight, according to a report.

Daniel Farke wants Leeds United to add attacking quality

It comes as no secret that the key to staying in the Premier League is by possessing an adequate level of attacking flair. Still, nobody is under any illusions that smart recruitment is needed at Elland Road to ensure options are up to scratch.

Speaking after his side’s pre-season draw to Villarreal, Daniel Farke has admitted Leeds need to acquire competition in the final third as his side are ‘not ready’ to take on the rigours of England’s most prestigious division without reinforcements.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkebefore the match

He stated: “We are not naive. We know that even in comparison to our Championship offence, you could say that we are not much improved. We know in the offence we are not ready for Premier League level. We’ve proven we can be ready for one game and for that I am not too concerned at the moment as it stands.”

With that in mind, Leeds are still very much in the race to sign Everton’s Beto after previously being linked with a move for the Toffees’ forward earlier in the window.

Versatile attacker Jota Silva is also on the Whites’ radar and looks set to leave Nottingham Forest. Nevertheless, Sporting Lisbon are also in the race to sign the Portugal international.

Time is marching on, and plenty of work remains to be done. Now, Leeds have been offered someone who could revolutionise their attack in the Premier League.

Leeds United offered chance to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic

Accoridng to TBR Football, Leeds have been offered the chance to sign Al-Hilal forward Aleksandar Mitrovic by intermediaries and it remains to be seen whether a potential loan move could materialise involving the Serbia international.

Fulham and Sunderland have also been contacted over his potential availability amid speculation that the former Newcastle United man could leave the Gulf region as his current employers enter the market for a new striker.

Labelled a “sensation” by former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, the 30-year-old is a recognisable name with considerable top-flight experience that could meet Farke wish to improve his pool of attacking options.

However, it remains to be seen whether his wages would be affordable for Leeds, given that Mitrovic is said to earn £400,000 per week on the books at the Al-Hilal Stadium.

Scoring 68 goals in 79 appearances since his departure from Fulham, the Smederevo-born man has maintained the consistency shown from his time in England and if he were to arrive at Elland Road could certainly have a positive impact on their survival chances.

Man Utd set to make bid to sign £70m star who is open to Old Trafford move

Manchester United are expected to make an offer for a £70m star, who is now leaning towards a move to Old Trafford despite interest from another Premier League club, according to a report.

Man Utd pursuing striker amid Hojlund uncertainty

With less than two weeks to go before the start of the Premier League season, Man United are still yet to get a new centre-forward through the door, which is likely to be a concern for Ruben Amorim, given that his current options struggled last season.

Rasmus Hojlund scored just four Premier League goals in the 2024-25 campaign, and the Danish striker clearly hasn’t done enough in pre-season to convince Amorim he deserves another chance, with United now open to a departure.

Rasmus Hojlund

Indeed, widespread reports have suggested the Red Devils would be willing to take a major loss on Hojlund by cashing in for just £30m.

In recent times, it has emerged that RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is one of Amorim’s major targets to replace Hojlund, although Newcastle United are also in the picture.

In a promising update from Sky Sports, however, it has been revealed that Sesko is leaning towards a move to Old Trafford, despite rival interest from Newcastle, with Man United now expected to make a formal offer.

United have held talks with Leipzig regarding how much a deal would cost, with Newcastle also in ongoing negotiations, having already made a second bid in the region of £70m.

Seales' 4 for 5 gives West Indies control as Bangladesh fold for 164

In response, Brathwaite and Carty took the hosts to 70 for 1 at stumps

Hemant Brar01-Dec-2024Jayden Seales registered astonishing figures of 15.5-10-5-4 as West Indies bowled out Bangladesh for 164 on the second day of the second Test at Sabina Park. Seales’ analyses were the most economical in Test cricket since 1977 (minimum 60 balls). In response, West Indies lost Mikyle Louis early but Kraigg Brathwaite and Keacy Carty took them to 70 for 1 before bad light forced early stumps for the second successive day.It was Shamar Joseph, though, who first rocked the Bangladesh innings. At one stage, the visitors were 83 for 2. In the next 34 balls, they collapsed to 98 for 6 as Shamar picked up three of the four wickets to fall.He first ended a patient stand of 73 between Shadman Islam and Shahadat Hossain by castling the latter for 22. Soon after, he had Jaker Ali caught behind with a short ball. The batter was late on the pull; he top-edged it onto his shoulder and the ball lobbed behind the stumps for an easy catch to Joshua Da Silva. In his next over, Shamar found the outside edge of Shadman to provide Da Silva his fourth catch of the innings. In between, Seales had Litton Das caught at first slip for 1.After lunch, however, Shamar and Alzarri Joseph overused the short-ball ploy against Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam. The two batters hung around for 116 balls and added 41. Eventually, Taijul fended a short ball from Alzarri to third slip.Seales then snared the last three wickets for five runs. Taskin was the first to depart. He tried to pull a short ball but the edge flew behind the stumps. Da Silva leapt and parried it towards second slip where Alick Athanaze dived backwards to pouch it with both hands.Seales had Mehidy top-edging a hook into the hands of fine leg in the same over before uprooting Nahid Rana’s leg stump to wrap up the innings. The Bangladesh seamers also started miserly, giving away only 16 runs in the ten overs before tea. After tea, Rana breached the 150kph mark multiple times and had Louis caught behind for 12.Taijul also found help from the surface and neither Brathwaite nor Carty could get him away. Seven of his ten overs were maidens but he could not pick up a wicket.

Arteta must axe 4/10 Arsenal star who was worse than Gyokeres vs Man Utd

Positivity, excitement and optimism. Those are just three of the words associated with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign.

However, arguably for the first time since this project really started to motor, a sense of negativity has crept in.

Arteta’s side have enjoyed an interesting summer. The likes of Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres are standout purchases but something is missing, notably on the left.

With Manchester City and Liverpool strengthening again, spending mega bucks, it really does feel as though the title is far away again.

Still, Arsenal did go to Old Trafford on the Premier League’s opening weekend and win 1-0. It’s not always been a happy hunting ground so Arteta’s men will take the three points and swiftly move on.

Arsenal were resilient and staunch in their efforts to claim the victory but it certainly wasn’t all plain sailing, not least for debutant Gyokeres.

What went wrong for Gyokeres on Arsenal debut

After scoring his first goal for the club in their 3-0 pre-season win over Bilbao a week ago, there were high hopes for Gyokeres.

That’s not forgetting the fact he scored 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting last term either.

Yet, in Manchester on Sunday, Gyokeres cut a frustrated figure, someone who struggled to get into the game and was let down by his teammates.

The Swede regularly burst into the channels and on a frequent basis wasn’t played the ball.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Those beside him, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, only produced two key passes as the club’s big summer signing was starved of any service.

So, after failing to have a single shot on goal within an hour of his debut, he was withdrawn from the action to loud jeers from the home crowd, with Kai Havertz brought on in his place.

As Football.London’s Tom Canton noted, the centre forward ‘struggled to get into the game in the first half and was limited in terms of service and touches.’

So room for improvement, but he wasn’t the worst player on the away side.

The Arsenal player who was worse than Gyokeres

Speaking of the forward line, it was a poor day at the office for Arsenal’s wingers.

This is significant because it’s an area of the squad that Andrea Berta and Co have been trying to improve this summer.

Noni Madueke has joined from Chelsea but there’s a cry from supporters to sign someone of the quality of Eberechi Eze or Rodrygo.

Well, those cries will only have grown louder after Martinelli’s ineffective showing on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilian was handed a 4/10 rating by the Standard, who wrote that there was a ‘familiar issue – no conviction in the final third.’

Last season, that was also very much the case for Martinelli and there has no improvement over pre-season and into the full season.

This is a big worry, particularly if Berta doesn’t sign another winger between now and the deadline.

The numbers paint a grim picture of just how poor the 24-year-old was. He managed just one shot – a tame effort right at the goalkeeper.

Furthermore, he only attempted one dribble that ended up being unsuccessful, had one key pass, didn’t make a cross and only completed three passes before he was hooked on the hour.

To make matters worse, Martinelli had just 14 touches, 33 fewer than David Raya. He also won just 50% of his duels.

In all honesty, there wasn’t much that the wide player got right, with one moment summing up his last few years.

As Arsenal aimed to break through the centre of the pitch, the Brazil international looked to swing a ball out to the left-hand side of the field but dinked it right out of play.

If that’s a sign of things to come, then Arsenal need to sign a replacement instantly. Irrespective of their activity in the window, either Leandro Trossard or Madueke must replace him for the game with Leeds United next weekend.
