Tammy Abraham was full of praise for his AC Milan team-mate Rafael Leao following his exploits in the team's nervy 3-2 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Leao came on as a substitute and scored the goal that put the Rossoneri ahead in the game.

Leao had a sensational 45 minutes against Slovan Bratislava, coming on at half-time for Noah Okafor and scoring the goal that gave them a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute. Shortly after Leao's goal, Abraham made it 3-1 to give AC Milan some breathing space in their eventual 3-2 win.

It was a performance that will surely boost the Portuguese winger's confidence, given that he has found himself falling in the pecking order lately under coach Paulo Fonseca. Abraham, though, believes that Leao has no idea how impactful and effective he can be for Milan.

WHAT TAMMY ABRAHAM SAID

Abraham spoke to Sky Sport following the game and heaped praise on Leao. “Leao is a very important player for us," Abraham claimed (h/t Calciomercato). "I don’t think he knows how good he is. He can win games on his own, on his day he is unstoppable. We have to fill him with confidence and bring him on our path.”

Lizelle Lee becomes top-ranked ODI batter after strong run against India

Punam Raut and Lara Goodall also gain in the rankings after impressive performances

Wolvaardt – ‘To have the No. 1 batter in our side is absolutely amazing’

Lizelle Lee, the South Africa opening batter, has had a stellar run in the ongoing ODI series against India, and that has led to a steep rise in the women’s ODI rankings, where she is now the top batter, relegating England’s Tammy Beaumont to No. 2. Last week, after scoring 83* in the series opener, Lee had moved up from No. 11 to eighth, and since then, a run of 4, 132* and 69 has seen her zoom through even as South Africa have taken a winning 3-1 lead in the series.Lee, the only South African ever to top that table, had earlier been the best in the world in June 2018 after scoring 92* and 117 against England, though South Africa had lost that series 2-1.Though India have fallen short in three of the matches, their top-order batter Punam Raut has had a very good run, totalling 253 runs from four innings so far compared to Lee’s 288. Like Lee, she has also scored two half-centuries and a century, and that has led to a rise of eight spots to 18th. She is fourth-best Indian in the list after Smriti Mandhana (seventh), Mithali Raj (ninth) and Harmanpreet Kaur (15th).ESPNcricinfo LtdAmong the other premier performers in the four matches so far in Lucknow, South Africa’s Lara Goodall (49 and 59* in the second and fourth games) has gained 27 places to reach the 48th position.Chasing teams have won all four games so far – South Africa won the third game on the DLS method while chasing – and that has been because of some impressive bowling performances, especially in the morning. Jhulan Goswami, with eight wickets in three games, is top of that chart, with Shabnim Ismail one behind after four games, followed by Rajeshwari Gayakwad with five wickets. That has meant a rise to No. 3, behind the Australian pair of Jess Jonassen and Megan Schutt for Ismail, while Goswami has held on to her fifth place, while Gayakwad has gained four slots to No. 18.The final game of the series will be played on Wednesday.

Newcastle hold talks to beat Man Utd to "world-class" 7-time title winner

Looking to get one over on Manchester United and Dan Ashworth this summer, Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with an in-demand midfield reinforcement.

Newcastle transfer news

Just 10 days until the new Premier League campaign gets underway, Newcastle's list of arrivals is still fairly underwhelming. John Ruddy, Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall and Odysseas Vlachodimos hardly suggest that a return to the Champions League football is on the cards, but there's still time for that to change through the arrival of Marc Guehi.

Those at St James' Park are now reportedly in talks to sign the Crystal Palace defender, even supposedly agreeing personal terms with the centre-back. His arrival would add some star power to their summer whilst handing Eddie Howe quite the defensive boost. And he might not be the only name through the door before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Sheffield United youngster William Osula is reportedly on the verge of completing a move worth £15m with add-ons. It is, however, a midfielder who could steal the headlines.

According to CalcioMercato, Newcastle have held talks to sign Adrien Rabiot, who has been a free agent since leaving Juventus at the end of last season. The Frenchman, who has a league title to his name in Italy to go with the six he won at PSG, has also attracted interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United.

Earning a reported £145,000-a-week before he left Turin, even without a transfer fee Rabiot would not come cheap. That said, given Sandro Tonali's likely rustiness after his ban as well as ongoing doubts over Bruno Guimareaes' long-term future, Rabiot could prove to be worth every penny at St James' Park.

The former Juventus man is a serial winner who has won countless honours at both the Serie A giants and Paris Saint-Germain. Now 29 years old, he may yet get the chance to step into the Premier League.

"World-class" Rabiot would be an upgrade on Longstaff

If Newcastle want to make their return to the Champions League following last season's failure, then signing players of Rabiot's calibre is the way forward. The Frenchman, in a bargain deal, would be an instant upgrade on Longstaff. Meanwhile, when Tonali returns, and if he hits the ground running, Howe could suddenly have quite the trio in Rabiot, Guimaraes and the Italian.

A player who's defensively better than Longstaff whilst outperforming the Newcastle man in some areas on the ball on top of bringing a wealth of experience to the table, Rabiot is one that should make sense for the Magpies this summer.

Whilst deciding his future at Juventus, the 29-year-old earned plenty of praise from the legendary David Trezeguet, who said via JuveFC: "We are talking about a problem for Juventus because in Italy he may have been targeted for criticism, but in France it’s completely different. He is world class, an extraordinary player. Now he will evaluate his options and will go back to being the important player he always was.”

Shades of Aguero: Man City could land dream Alvarez replacement

Manchester City have made a dream start to their 2024/25 campaign, having won their opening three competitive fixtures. They have so far played in the Community Shield and Premier League, and find themselves three wins from three in a season where they will be hoping to reclaim their treble from 2023/24, of which they now only have the English top flight to their name.

Their first outing of the new campaign saw the Cityzens get a 1-1 draw and then a penalty victory over Manchester United at Wembley. It was a game in which Bernardo Silva bailed them out with a late equaliser after Alejandro Garnacho gave the Red Devils the lead before City went on to win on penalties.

Bernardo Silva celebrates scoring for Manchester City.

In the first Premier League game of the season for the team in sky blue, it was a routine 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic against his former club ensured the Cityzens left west London with all three points, before the towering Norwegian bagged a treble in the 4-1 thumping of Ipswich Town.

Perhaps surprisingly, it has not been a very busy summer transfer window yet at the Etihad Stadium, although they have had one major outgoing in particular, and they might not be done yet when it comes to making new signings, either.

Man City’s major outgoing so far

The major outgoing for Pep Guardiola’s side this summer has been the sale of Julian Alvarez. The 24-year-old, who was seen as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero when he signed for the club, left to join Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

According to reports, the deal City got for selling the World Cup winner with Argentina saw remarkable profit. They sold him for an initial fee of £64m, with add-ons which could total up to a potential £17.1m more, making the deal worth a total of £81.5m.

Although he was only at the club for two seasons, the former River striker won some of the biggest trophies in world football, including the Premier League twice and the Champions League, and was a key part of the treble-winning squad in 2023/24.

In total, he played 103 games for the Cityzens, scoring 36 times and registering 18 assists, and showed real versatility, often being the player Guardiola would turn to if he needed someone to slot into an unfamiliar attacking position.

He struggled to lock down a place at centre-forward, due to Erling Haaland making that position his own over the two years he has been at the club, hence his decision to leave the club for pastures anew in the 2024/25 campaign.

Man City's replacement for Alvarez

According to a report from the Athletic earlier this week, the Cityzens might have already found their replacement for Alvarez. The Premier League champions are thought to be ‘weighing up a move’ for Celtic and Japan international striker Kyogo Furuhashi, who is valued at £20m by the Scottish giants.

Kyogo Furuhashi

He has a superb record for Celtic, after being brought to the club by then-manager Ange Postecoglou. In 135 games for the Bhoys, the Japan international has scored 73 goals and registered 16 assists in just 135 games.

There are certainly similarities between Furuhashi and City legend Aguero. Like the Argentine, he is a small striker, standing at 5 foot 5 with Aguero slightly taller at 5 foot 6. However, he also possesses elite movement, especially in the penalty box, which former manager Postecoglou called “the best I’ve ever seen”.

The former City striker was described as “an excellent penalty box striker” by one Spanish news outlet when he joined Barcelona in 2021, further showing the similarities between the two strikers, and reinforcing the fact he could be the Argentine’s heir.

Aguero himself was spellbinding for the Cityzens, and his record speaks volumes. Aside from all of the goals he scored, the former City number ten helped the club to five Premier League titles and won the Golden Boot once.

Spurs boss Posteocglou was clearly a big fan of the Japanese striker whilst he managed him at Celtic Park. The Australian described him as “outstanding”, and his record and general centre-forward play in the penalty box certainly shows why he was described in such a way by the former Celtic manager.

It may well seem like a surprise move from the Cityzens, but Guardiola loved Aguero before his departure from the Etihad Stadium, claiming that the club “cannot replace him”.

However, he may have found a striker to do just that, adding a very similar profile to his squad once more. For just £20m, this seems like it could be yet another masterstroke from Guardiola and City.

Salah has now scored and assisted in 37 games, breaking the previous record set by Wayne Rooney. Amazingly, with 277 Premier League appearances, he has played 214 fewer games than the ex-Manchester United and Everton striker, who played 491 top-flight matches.

Salah underlined his importance to Liverpool yet again with his display against Newcastle amid uncertainty around his future. The 32-year-old has suggested he will leave Anfield when his contract expires this summer and said he has not been offered an extension by the club.

Imagine him & Odobert: Spurs readying bid for "breathtaking" new signing

Tottenham Hotspur do not kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign until they travel to the King Power stadium to take on Leicester City on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou and his team have been able to watch the opening weekend of the division unfold before they take to the field in the last match of the gameweek.

The Australian head coach will surely be eyeing up a minimum target of securing a top four position in the league this term, having missed out on Champions League football last season.

Daniel Levy has dipped into the transfer market to strengthen the squad during the summer transfer window, in an attempt to improve the manager's options across the park.

Archie Gray has been brought in from Leeds United, Dominic Solanke was snapped up from Bournemouth, and Wilson Odobert is the latest recruit from Burnley – with all three joining on a permanent basis.

There are still just under two weeks left to go before the end of the summer transfer window and this means that there could be further additions before the deadline passes.

Tottenham are still reportedly in the market to make further additions to the group, with a defender seemingly on the agenda for the Lilywhites.

Spurs preparing bid for Brazilian ace

According to reports in Brazil, Levy is readying a Spurs bid to sign right-back Vanderson from AS Monaco before the end of the month.

The reporter claims that the Premier League side are prepared to offer €32m (£27m) as an initial fee for the Brazilian defender, along with add-ons and bonuses to take it beyond that.

This shows that the Lilywhites are serious about a swoop for the former Gremio whiz, as they are willing to pay a significant sum of money to add him to their squad.

Andrade does not reveal whether or not that will be enough to tempt the Ligue 1 outfit into cashing in on the full-back, but adds that the two clubs are in ongoing talks over a potential deal for the 23-year-old star.

It had previously been reported that Spurs are looking at Vanderson as a replacement for Emerson Royal, who recently completed a permanent move to AC Milan.

Emerson's exit from the club has left Pedro Porro as Postecoglou's only senior option at right-back, which is why a move for the Monaco defender does make a lot of sense this month.

If Tottenham can get a deal for Vanderson over the line before the end of the window then he could be a dream addition to play behind Odobert, who has just signed from Burnley.

What Wilson Odobert could bring to Spurs

Firstly, it is worth remembering that the French talent is only 19 and it would be unfair to expect great things from him in his first season at the club.

He only has 29 games of Premier League experience under his belt for Burnley and will need time to continue to adjust to the league and to first-team football.

However, despite his age and inexperience, Odobert is an exciting player who could still produce moments of quality in a Spurs shirt when given an opportunity to perform this season.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage whiz did well with the chances that fell his way as he scored three goals from just 2.81 xG for the relegated side.

Meanwhile, his teammates let him down with their wasteful finishing as they could only find the back of the net two times from his seven 'big chances' created.

Odobert ranked within the top 31% of midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.14) and the top 29% for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.21), which shows that he was an above-average creator in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old sensation also started the current campaign in fantastic form with a goal and a 'big chance' created against Luton Town in the Championship before his move to Spurs was completed.

Tottenham could now land a perfect right-back to play behind the winger, who can play on the left or the right flank, by landing Vanderson this month.

Why Vanderson would be perfect for Odobert

To understand why the Brazilian would be an ideal partner for the Frenchmen, it is first worth noting that the former Burnley man is not the strongest out of possession.

Odobert lost 55% of his duels in the Premier League last season and ranked within the bottom 18% or lower of his positional peers for clearances, aerial battles won, tackles, and interceptions per 90 respectively.

This suggests that Spurs would, before the winger develops and improves that side of his game, need a defensively strong full-back behind him to make up for the youngster's lack of defensive awareness.

Vanderson's form in Ligue 1 for Monaco last season suggests that he would be the perfect player to support Odobert down the flank, due to his ability to compete in and win duels.

The Brazilian defender did not provide a huge attacking threat, with three goals and one assist, in his 20 Ligue 1 outings last term, but did showcase his defensive quality with a whopping 4.8 tackles and interceptions combined per match.

As you can see in the table above, Vanderson was one of the best full-backs in the French top-flight in a host of defensive statistics in the 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old ace, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed has "breathtaking energy", also started the current Ligue 1 season in sensational form on Saturday.

He assisted one goal, created two 'big chances', made six tackles and interceptions combined, and won 57% of his duels against Saint-Etienne – showing off his ability in and out of possession.

Overall, Vanderson appears to be the perfect target to come in and play at full-back with a winger who is not defensively aware, as he can make up for that with his sensational defensive play.

U.S. international Tim Weah came on as a late substitute in Juventus' 4-0 Coppa Italia win over Cagliari on Tuesday, one which halted the club's recent winless run in domestic games. The U.S. men's national team star apparently suffered an injury during that 10-minute cameo, with Juventus announcing that Weah had undergone examinations on Wednesday morning.

Those examinations revealed a slight thigh injury for Weah, with the Athletic reporting the winger expected to miss at least two weeks.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT JUVENTUS SAID

"Following the muscular problem suffered on Tuesday night in the Coppa Italia match against Cagliari, Timothy Weah underwent clinical and instrumental examinations this morning at J|Medical, which revealed a low-grade injury of the femoral biceps of the right thigh," the club said in a statement.

The injury comes at a rough time for Weah, who was continuing to rebuild momentum after an earlier ailment forced him to miss a large chunk of the season's first few months. Weah was hampered by hamstring and ankle injuries earlier this season, forcing him to miss much of August, September and October.

Now, it appears Weah will miss Juventus' clashes against Monza and Fiorentina to close out 2024. There is a chance he could also miss the Supercoppa Italiana semifinal against AC Milan and two American national teammates in Christian Pulisic (if he's back from injury) and Yunus Musah.

This injury robs the club of another key attacker as it is already missing several other players, including Andrea Cambiaso and Arkadiusz Milik, who are set to return soon, as well as Gleison Bremer, who is out for the season with an ACL injury.

Weah has four goals and an assist in Serie A play and also was credited with an assist on Nico Gonzalez's fantastic finish on Tuesday in the Coppa Italia.
