Lichtsteiner hard at work in Instagram snap despite Arsenal release

[ad_pod ]

Stephan Lichtsteiner found his name on the list of players Arsenal are officially releasing from their contracts on June 30, just eight days from now.

As it stands, this Swiss veteran is soon to be without a club and yet to determine in which direction his career goes. With all of that being said, however, that hasn’t stopped this 35-year-old from spending his holiday working.

Lichtsteiner took to

/By97uS3H5wV/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to show off his training despite currently not representing any colours.

His adventure at the Emirates was a rather short one as he is leaving Arsenal after just a single season since joining the Gunners from Juventus in the summer of 2018.

During that time, he managed 23 games, scoring and assisting one goal. Even though he never really played a major role for Unai Emery and his squad, this Swiss veteran did bring a bit of experience and stability when it was needed.

We’ll still have to wait and see what the future holds for him but as of 30 June, he will be a free agent.

Southampton: Pull out all the stops for Che Adams

Southampton must be looking to add some quality to their squad this summer as manager Ralph Hassenhuttl seeks to improve his first XI.

The Saints narrowly avoided relegation last season but picked up towards the end of the season under their new manager, and they will now be fully focussed on improving the ranks at St Mary’s and making a better fist of things heading into the new campaign.

Indeed, one player who the club are looking at bringing in is Birmingham City striker Che Adams.

But with latest reports (via the Daily Echo) appearing to suggest that the Saints will pull the plug on any deal for Adams if Birmingham continue to ask for more money for their main man, we here in the Tavern think that Hassenhuttl should be convincing his board to pull out all the stops to land Adams.

Adams was simply brilliant last season for the Blues as he fired in over 20 goals in what was a difficult season for the club due to off-field issues once more.

And it is this form which makes Adams one of the hottest properties in the Championship, and someone who we believe Southampton can simply not afford to miss out on.

The goals on their own are enough to make Southampton really push to sign the young striker, with the Saints’ top scorer last season being Nathan Redmond, who notched a paltry nine goals ahead of the likes of strikers Shane Long and Danny Ings.

If Adams can replicate some of the form he showed for Birmingham last season, then Southampton will have addressed the glaring problem their squad suffered from last season.

Quick, powerful and with the potential to only go and get better and better in the top flight, Adams could well make a massive difference for the Saints heading into the 19/20 campaign.

Arsenal: Emery has to listen to Charlie Nicholas and bring in centre-backs

So, here we are, Arsenal fans. After a slow start to the transfer window for the majority of clubs, it’s now becoming a little bit worrying that the Gunners are yet to sign a central defender. You’re not the only ones worried, though, as Charlie Nicholas has voiced his concern.

The former Arsenal man, whilst speaking on The Transfer Talk podcast, transcribed by The Express, has come out with a bold call, stating that his ex-club need ‘immediately two centre-backs’ and that ‘they need a bit of pace, they’ve never really had the pace.’ when talking about the current defence.

It really is hard to disagree with Nicholas too, even if he isn’t your favourite Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundit. His claims are only backed up by stats too, for those who will try and disagree. Unai Emery’s side shipped 51 goals this season, 12 more than Spurs, who pipped them to fourth by a single point, and also more than all of Newcastle, Everton, Leicester and Wolves.

Arsenal may be in a tough spot because of the options they have, though. Shkodran Mustafi may just be one of the first men the fans want out of the club as some supporters called for his head back in March (as per Daily Star), and Laurent Koscielny is now 33-years-old and has seen his injuries catch up with him, making the pair the prime candidates to be shipped out. It just so happens that Nicholas singled the two out himself in his comments.

‘The guy who had pace was Koscielny but he kind of lost his pace two, three seasons ago under Arsene Wenger.

‘It was through the injuries, it wasn’t the lad’s fault, but it was the reality of the injuries has caught up with him.

‘Then after that we had to go round about the houses to accept that Mustafi didn’t fit in.’

From this, it’s made clear who Nicholas wants to get rid of, yet with youngsters Konstantinos Mavropanos and Rob Holding, things aren’t all bad. There’s also the big Greek monster Sokratis Papastathopoulous to factor in, but that doesn’t mean Arsenal shouldn’t open the chequebook.

It does look like Emery might be close to bolstering the Gunners’ defence, though, as Arsenal are reportedly (as per ESPN) set to win the race to sign William Saliba.

Hatem Abd Elhamed lacks the speciality that Celtic need in defence

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are interested in signing Israeli international defender Hatem Abd Elhamed, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The Hoops have already strengthened their defensive options this summer with the acquisitions of Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo, but they need more players centrally and on the right.

One player who has experience of playing in both positions is Hapoel Be’er Sheva defender Abd Elhamed, who the paper say that Celtic could move for in a £1.6m deal.

He is an international teammate of Hoops star Nir Bitton, winning his first cap for his country in a recent qualifier against Poland.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

Is he what Celtic need?

A look at Abd Elhamed’s playing career shows a player who has had a colourful life in the game so far. At the age of 28 he’s played for five clubs and and in a variety of positions too.

During the 2014/15 season he appeared to play exclusively as a midfielder with Dinamo Bucharest, but was also highlighted playing as a right-back in a scouting video from his time at FC Ashdod.

Last season he played most of his games at Be’er Sheva as a central defender but also played on the left and right sides of defence.

That verstaility may be seen as a bonus for Celtic, but his lack of specialism in one position throughout his career rings alarm bells when it comes to his defensive prowess.

The Hoops need players in their prime who have honed their skills as experienced pros in their roles, not a player who appears to change his position almost as often as his clubs.

Given he is in his late 20s, to be suitable for Celtic he’d also be expected to have experience in a more high profile league or plenty of appearances in European competition, with neither sticking out in his career record.

The Bhoys should forget about this jack-of-all-trades, as he is a master of none.

Celtic fans enjoyed Kristoffer Ajer’s performance in an unfamiliar position

[ad_pod ]

Celtic central defender Kristoffer Ajer was tasked with playing at right-back on Tuesday night, but came through the match with a big thumbs up from supporters.

After the exits of Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa, the only recognised right-back at the club right now is Anthony Ralston, who lacks the experience to be relied upon in big European matches, making just ten starts in Celtic colours to date.

Keith from C’mon the Hoops throws back to a true Celtic icon in the video below…

Manager Neil Lennon turned to Ajer for the season-opening test away to FK Sarajevo, with the Norwegian international having played in the position just a handful of times in his career so far.

With solid tackling and the odd marauding run though, he looked like a good option on the right flank, certainly doing enough to hold his head up as one of the key performers in the 3-1 win.

Leicester could be forced to change set-piece tactics if they sign Lewis Dunk

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

One of the longest transfer sagas this summer has been that of Harry Maguire’s potential departure to Manchester United.

Earlier this month, they bid £80m for the central defender before it was reported that the transfer was imminent.

Also in the headlines has been Lewis Dunk who has been touted as a possible replacement for the Foxes in a £45m deal.

If the two transfers go through, they’d be huge for all clubs involved, yet Leicester could be forced into making a big change to their play.

On the chalkboard

One of Maguire’s and Leicester’s favoured routes to goal in the past has been from set-pieces.

The centre-back scored against Sweden at the World Cup from a set-play whilst he’s popped up with a further three strikes from these situations in the last two years for Leicester.

Per Understat, he’s scored five times from corners and free-kicks in the Premier League alone throughout his career.

As can be seen below, Maguire likes to drift towards the penalty spot from Leicester’s set-plays, scoring twice and also hitting the post in those sorts of areas.

However, if they land Dunk this summer, this form of attack and route to goal may have to be changed.

According to Understat, the 27-year-old Brighton man scored twice from set plays in 2018/19 but his impact came far closer to the goal.

In fact, his effectiveness in the same place as Maguire was hugely limited, missing all but one of his shots from positions between the six-yard area and the edge of the box.

As a result, if Dunk arrives and Maguire leaves, Brendan Rodgers could find himself instructing his set-piece takers into playing the ball into a different area.

If you think the rumoured £80m for Harry Maguire is too much, check out how much his potential replacement will cost in the video below…

Both of the former’s goals last term came from closer than six-yards out, meaning it may be preferable for Leicester to have in-swinging corners towards the back and front posts.

Not only could Leicester’s defence be changed if they sign Dunk, but so could their attack.

Rangers should take what they can get for Eros Grezda and run

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Ligue 1 side Brest have shown interest in Rangers flop Eros Grezda, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Brest join fellow French side Dijon in showing an interest in the Albanian winger, say The Scottish Sun. The 24-year-old is a man in demand then, though it’s kind of hard to understand why after last season.

The winger was signed for £2m last summer, but featured just 17 times for the first-team, scoring twice and adding an assist in an underwhelming campaign for the Gers.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Steven Gerrard is looking to dump five players this summer, with Grezda being joined by Kyle Lafferty, Joe Dodoo, Graham Dorrans and Jason Holt on that unfortunate list.

The gaffer has of course added several wingers to the squad already this summer in the shape of Jake Hastie, Greg Stewart, Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo. This improved depth is yet another reason why Grezda’s time is surely up.

Time to move on

Having only started seven times in a side that’s arguably gotten stronger since last term, thanks to those aforementioned signings, it simply must be time for Gerrard to move the winger on.

In Ojo and Jones, they have two wingers ready to go straight into the starting XI, while Hastie and Stewart are both proven in the Scottish Premiership, something Grezda most certainly isn’t.

Thanks to the interest from Dijon and Brest, Rangers have a golden chance to chalk up the transfer as a failure and cash in before his contract runs down and his value declines.

It might be a small hit to the pride of Gerrard after spending £2m on a man who has turned out to be nothing more than an overpriced flop, but it will also allow more pathways for youngsters like Hastie and Ojo to play and improve.

Selling Grezda makes sense for the player too, as at 24 he should be approaching the prime of his career, not warming the bench for all but seven starts. If an offer does arrive from either of the Ligue 1 sides, the Gers shouldn’t even think twice about it.

Everton are wasting everyone’s time with £55m Wilfried Zaha offer

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol, Everton have submitted a £55m offer to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha, which involves no players included as part of the deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Toffees appear to have joined the race for the 26-year-old along with Arsenal and Chelsea, although the Gunners may be out of the equation after agreeing a fee of €80m (£72m) with Lille for Nicolas Pepe.

Marco Silva’s side have reportedly lodged the £55m offer as their opening bid, although other reports suggest they could hand the Eagles £60m + Turkey international Cenk Tosun.

The Ivory Coast international shone last term with 10 goals and five assists in the league for Palace, and also netted twice at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations – the south Londoners value their No.11 at £80m.

Opening offer a huge waste of everyone’s time

As previously mentioned, Arsenal hold an interest in Zaha and have made a few offers already.

The first one was a measly £40m, half of what Palace value the forward at, whilst the second one was worth an initial £55m + Reiss Nelson on loan for the 2019/20 season – both offers were swiftly rejected.

So, in that case, why on earth would the Eagles accept Everton’s offer of the same cash total as Arsenal offered, without a player being included such as the Gunners decided to do?

Of course, by all means start the opening offer low and work your way up – that much is obvious from a business viewpoint.

However, just offering an amount – or in fact less of an amount – that has already been rejected without consideration seems a pretty pointless thing for Marcel Brands to do, and it would be concerning if the Merseysiders actually thought it would get them anywhere in their pursuit of the former Manchester United attacker.

Everton’s offer makes absolutely no sense given the details of Arsenal’s two previous bids.

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman closing in on Victor Camarasa deal

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Spanish media outlet Marca, via Football Espana, Crystal Palace appear to be closing in on a deal to sign Real Betis midfielder Victor Camarasa as sporting director Dougie Freedman finally looks set to pull a top summer signing out of the bag for the Eagles.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Marca report that the south London outfit have already agreed terms with the 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff City in the Premier League.

Marca say that the deal has been held up slightly over the structure of a potential deal, with Betis initially rejecting a proposal for a loan-to-buy option on the Spaniard.

The report adds that a transfer now looks set to be concluded for a fee ranging between €12m-€15m (£11m-£13.7m), with the south London outfit set to strengthen their central midfield options.

Freedman finally delivers

It would be fair to say that it has been a long and frustrating summer in the transfer market for many Palace supporters, who have seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka depart for Manchester United and only free-agent goalkeeper Stephen Henderson and last season’s loanee Jordan Ayew arrive at Selhurst Park.

Watch Crystal Palace Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Freedman clearly hasn’t enjoyed much luck elsewhere as the days have rolled on, but now it appears he is getting closer to Camarasa – and what a signing he could be.

The 25-year-old is a good age and would arrive in south London with Premier League experience following his spell with the Bluebirds last term – five goals, four assists and 1.4 key passes per game in a struggling team prove what he is capable of from an attacking point of view, while WhoScored also list one of his strengths as his defensive contribution.

In addition, former Eagles manager Neil Warnock, who is in charge of the now Championship outfit, has labelled him as “one of the best midfield players I’ve had” – high praise indeed.

To get a player of his quality for potentially less than £14m has to be seen as a big win the current climate of extortionate transfer fees, and Freedman will deserve a big pat on the back if he gets a deal over the line.

Have Sky Sports been exposed as liars this summer? Watch the video below to find out why…

With the likes of Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate already bossing things in the centre, Palace could be a real force to be reckoned with when it comes to midfield battles should they get Camarasa too.

Newcastle’s record signing looks bizarre in light of Benitez comments

[ad_pod ]

Rafael Benitez has spoken out about his exit from Newcastle, and one detail he revealed about Joelinton is very concerning indeed.

What’s he said?

The Spaniard has hit back at claims from managing director Lee Charnley, who said in Sunday’s match-day programme that the club offered Benitez the best deal they could, but he left to earn more money in China.

In a heartfelt column in The Athletic, Benitez wrote: “Newcastle’s board had a year to sort out my contract but, when we met after the end of last season, they didn’t make me an offer I could accept.

“They told me they didn’t want to invest in the academy or the training ground — if they like, I can explain the reason why Mike Ashley refused to do that.

“Their idea of a project was a policy of signing players under 24 and, in my opinion, the budget available was not enough to compete for the top 10.

“After that meeting, I knew they would not come back with a serious offer and, when it arrived, 19 days later, it was for the same salary as three years earlier and with less control over signings.

“Charnley’s comments in the programme about having a deal agreed for Joelinton in February explains a lot that I couldn’t understand at that time.

“After three years of unfulfilled promises, I didn’t trust them.”

Didn’t want Joelinton

As if it needed confirming, Benitez’s comments align with the suspicions of the Toon Army that managers at St. James’ Park are not in charge of transfers.

The club agreed to sign Joelinton in February, Charnley claims, yet Benitez was clearly not impressed, as one has to imagine he would have stayed if it was his target they were breaking their transfer record on, rather than the club’s target.

That also begs the question of whether Steve Bruce, who arrived this summer some months after Charnley says a deal was set, will get the best out of the Brazilian, as the 58 year-old was not in the loop about the club’s record arrival.

Splashing out £40m, almost double the previous record signing Miguel Almiron, without even involving the side’s manager is downright ludicrous.

This is not to say it is unusual for clubs to have the final say on incoming players over the man in the dugout, but it is certainly unusual to double your record signing on a player the manager had no influence in wanting or signing.

For example, imagine if Liverpool were to double their record deal to sign Virgil van Dijk and splash out £150m on a new superstar, except that superstar is someone Jurgen Klopp has no interest in and had no influence in signing. It doesn’t bear thinking about. It doesn’t seem believable. It’s utterly ridiculous.

On Tyneside however, it seems to be the norm.
