West Ham fans flock to El Ghazi claim

Flocking to Twitter, a number of West Ham United fans have reacted to a fresh transfer claim involving Aston Villa forward Anwar El Ghazi.

David Moyes has had a forward on his Irons transfer agenda for some time, with his search dating back to all the way last year.

Indeed, after the club sold their record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax 12 months ago, the West Ham manager confirmed that his side were indeed on the look out and bids had been made.

That quest for new attacking additions has continued into 2022, with Football Insider now sharing the latest on Moyes’ and West Ham’s transfer plans for the winter window.

According to their information, the Irons – and by extension their manager – are plotting a move for El Ghazi this month, with the Hammers boss apparently seeing him as someone who can spearhead his attack through the middle.

This comes as Villa have put the player up for sale and are willing to negotiate either a temporary transfer or preferably a permanent one.

West Ham fans react…

Flocking to Twitter, these West Ham fans have reacted with their takes, with some certainly open to the idea of his signing while others have more mixed opinions.

Having scored 10 goals last season, you can see why some Irons supporters believe the “skilful” El Ghazi would be a shrewd capture, but others suggest that the club should set their sights higher this month.

LFC fans react negatively to Keita claim

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted negatively to a rumour claiming that Naby Keita is wanted by several top clubs, calling for him to stay put at Anfield.

The Guinean has suffered a hugely frustrating Reds career to date, having arrived from RB Leipzig in 2018 with a big reputation.

Keita has continually struggled to stay fit in his time on Merseyside and persistent injuries have limited him to just 92 Reds appearances, even though this is now his fourth season at the club.

The midfielder is a classy player when fit and available, with an exceptional performance in the 5-0 win away to Manchester United this season proof of that.

According to El Nacional [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Barcelona, Bayern Munich, West Ham, AC Milan and Roma are all eyeing up a summer move for Keita, whose current Liverpool deal expires next year.

Warne proposes 'super rounds', no player retention for future IPLs

Shane Warne has said that total transparency and no favouritism to any franchises is the best way to take the IPL into a fourth season

Cricinfo staff30-Apr-2010Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has put forward his suggestions to take the IPL into its fourth season and beyond, with total transparency and the absence of any favouritism to any franchises the main principles. Two radical ideas – expressed in an article on his website – are a mid-tournament player transfer window and franchises being allowed three ‘super rounds’, where they can field an extra international player. The current three-year player contracts will expire before the 2011 season, in which two new franchises will be included, and Warne’s own participation is in doubt. There is much speculation, and concern on the part of some players such as Sachin Tendulkar, over whether franchises will retain the core of their current teams. If this happened, Warne felt, it would be a disadvantage to the new franchises; instead, he suggested all players be put up for auction and the original franchises be allowed to buy them back for a premium.”No retention of players is a must for to achieve total transparency in regards to the salary cap. It will increase the creditability of the IPL as the players’ final price will be established at the auction, whatever that may be,” wrote Warne on his website. “However, the player can then be offered back to his original franchise for an extra $50,000.”If the player is important to the franchise, the extra $50,000 will be paid to the player to keep him at the franchise; if not, he plays for his new franchise. All players bought at the auction should continue to receive three-year contract for the auction value per year.”He called for a raise in the salary cap from the proposed $7million to $9 million; he explained that around $5 million would be spent on half a dozen key players alone. He also stressed that all franchises appoint their captains well before the auction and not include them in the salary cap.”If a franchise wants a particular captain, either their existing captain or a new one, they need to negotiate and agree to a deal,” wrote Warne. “If current captains cannot agree to a deal, he can potentially move to a new franchise as their captain or enter the auction. This will allow for owners, coaches and the captain to make their plans and strategies well before auction time.”As for the way the tournament panned out, Warne said franchises should be allowed three ‘super rounds’, to be used at their discretion, where they could play five overseas players instead of four.Warne also advocated a trade period be put into place during the mid-point of the tournament to allow franchises swap one player if they felt the need. This would not be compulsory, he said. “If they did choose to trade a player, it would be on a loan basis for a set amount of games, perhaps three This could be a great option to recruit an international player who is not being used by another franchise.”

ExWHUemployee drops contract update

West Ham United have opened negotiations with Angelo Ogbonna, Ben Johnson and Lukasz Fabianski in order to extend their stays at the London Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent The West Ham Way podcast that David Moyes’ side have opened contract talks with all three players, each of whom are currently on deals that expire at the end of the current campaign. An announcement regarding their respective extensions is expected to be made by the club in the near future.

In his post, the West Ham insider said: “Contract news should come soon. Negotiations have been ongoing for Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson have been for West Ham so far this season, the news that the club are working towards extending all three of their contracts beyond the end of the season is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over Johnson’s 11 Premier League appearances this term, the £2.7m-rated full-back has helped his side to keep two clean sheets and scored one goal, as well as making 1.3 interceptions, 2.2 tackles and 2.6 clearances per game and winning 54% of his duels.

These returns have seen the 21-year-old defender average an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.00, ranking him as the Hammers’ fifth-best performer in the league.

Meanwhile, over Fabianski’s 20 league outings in the current campaign, the £900k-rated goalkeeper has kept four clean sheets and made 3.3 saves per match, with these metrics seeing the 36-year-old shot-stopper average a SofaScore match rating of 6.88.

Finally, over Ogbonna’s 11 Premier League outings prior to suffering a cruciate ligament injury back in November, the £1.8m-rated centre-back had helped the Irons to keep three clean sheets and scored one goal. These returns saw the 33-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.71.

As such, considering just how important they are to the West Ham cause, the news that all three players look set to extend their respective stays in east London beyond the end of the current campaign is undoubtedly fantastic for everyone involved with the club.

England embark on Operation Whitewash

For the first time in a long time, Australia are being threatened with the prospect of a 5-0 whitewash, and must rely on their inner mongrel to salvage some dignity from a series in which they have been comfortably outplayed

The Preview by Andrew Miller29-Jun-2010Match factsKeeping their eye on the ball. England are determined not to let Australia reclaim any momentum in this series•Getty ImagesJune 30, 2010, The Oval
Start time 1pm (12.00GMT)Big pictureIn the end, it was close. So, so close. But thanks to Tim Bresnan’s selective slogging in the desperate closing overs at Old Trafford, England avoided their old-school trick of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory over Australia, and turned a jittery 2-1 scoreline into an unequivocally imposing 3-0 walkover. For the first time in a long time, Australia are being threatened with the prospect of a 5-0 whitewash, and must rely on their inner mongrel to salvage some dignity from a series in which they have been comfortably outplayed.Sporting contests often come down to the finest of margins – just ask England’s footballers, who will gripe for evermore about the goal that wasn’t in Bloemfontein. But in both of Sunday’s matches, the most memorable passage of play was also the most misleading. Until their dramatic collapse of six wickets for 18, England were cruising to their most crushing win of the campaign so far, and the fact that they held their nerve in spite of the late jitters actually said more about the spirit of their side than a seven-wicket stroll ever could have done. That’s not to say that further victories are a foregone conclusion – far from it. The spirit that Doug Bollinger and Shaun Tait summoned in adversity was stunning to behold, and gave England a timely reminder of the qualities required to play for a champion side. An Australian team with Ricky Ponting at the helm, no matter how quiet his current form may be, has a direct link to the country’s recent golden era, and as such, it retains an aura that England’s own prospective worldbeaters have yet to acquire. Now the series moves south to London, and it just so happens that the last two games, The Oval and Lord’s, were the scenes of Australia’s defeats in last summer’s Ashes. Whether that inspires either side to greater deeds is a moot point, but Ponting for one will not be lacking for incentives to get one over the old enemy. A dead rubber it may be in theory, but with a seminal winter in prospect, the tug-of-war over the bragging rights is only just getting started.Form guide (last five completed matches)England WWWWW
Australia LLLWLWatch out for…Shaun Tait’s return to 50-over action was unmissable. He hadn’t featured in the format since February 2009, but from the moment he detonated Craig Kieswetter’s middle stump in the first over of the run-chase, England had no option but to treat his missiles with utter respect. Ricky Ponting used him brilliantly, in shockingly quick two-over bursts, and each of his three wickets came in the first over of a new spell. He could be wild and woolly, and some his wides barely touched the cut strip, but when he got it right, his 95mph pace was too hot to handle.Kevin Pietersen has been subdued without looking out of form in the series to date. Some of his strokeplay has been out of this world, but scores of 29, 33 and 25 speak of a job half done. In many respects that is a testament to England’s dominance – KP has been a second-fiddle in most of his innings to date, to Eoin Morgan at the Rose Bowl and Andrew Strauss at Old Trafford – but it goes without saying, he’ll not want the series to drift by without putting in a command performance.Team newsShaun Marsh had been touted for a call-up to inject some new life into a misfiring batting line-up, but the signs are that Australia intend to stick to the men who’ve got them into this pickle in the first place. The new-look bowling attack did everything that was asked of it at Old Trafford, so no changes there either.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Shaun Tait, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.England’s spare parts have been continuing their exodus to the shires, with Ian Bell and Ajmal Shahzad loaned out to the Lions for their game against West Indies. Another sign that an unchanged team is in prospect.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsEngland’s heat-wave is set to continue, despite a brief shower on Tuesday that coincided, according to a certain tabloid, with the footballers’ return from South Africa. Another win-the-toss-and-bat wicket is in prospect – except, of course, that isn’t Andrew Strauss’s style right now …Stats and Trivia England’s run of three ODI wins in a row equals their best in recent times against Australia – their improbable revival under Andrew Flintoff during the CB Series in 2006-07. But they’ve still got a way to go to better the five in a row they achieved between 1995 and 1999, a run that included another 3-0 home scoreline in the 1997 Texaco Trophy. England have won 17 of their 31 ODIs at The Oval, but it’s not been their happiest hunting ground of late. They’ve won just two of their last eight fixtures, one against Bangladesh in 2005, and another against South Africa in 2008.Quotes”We’d love to stop them, 5-0 would be devastating. But we’ve just got to go out there and do everything properly and hopefully win the next two.”
“It’s important that we keep the momentum going and confidence going in this game and not look too far ahead. It’s been a great series win but I don’t think we’re finished.”
Michael Yardy wants England to complete the job they’ve started

NUFC: Downie makes striker claim

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s transfer plans as the Toon look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has claimed that the Magpies are in the market for another striker after bringing in Chris Wood from Burnley.

The reporter Tweeted: “£20m a lot of money for Wood but Newcastle well aware they’re running out of time to get players in. Was imperative they got at least one striker in before Saturday.”

He then added this five-word update: “Still trying for a second.”

Buzzing

This is update will surely leave Newcastle fans buzzing simply because it indicates that the club will add further firepower to their squad.

Eddie Howe’s team is not blessed with goalscorers and this means that bringing in players who can find the back of the net could provide him with a major lift ahead of the second half of the season.

It also reduces the chances of their transfer dealings flopping as it gives them two opportunities to bring in a striker who can score the goals to keep them up. For example, Wood could come through the door and struggle badly but the second forward they sign may hit the ground running and replicate Joe Willock’s eight-goal run from last season to keep the team in the division.

This is particularly important as Callum Wilson is currently out injured and set to miss the next couple of months of Premier League action. The ex-Bournemouth centre-forward is the club’s top scorer in the top tier this term, with six strikes to his name, and his absence leaves a major hole to fill at the top end of the pitch for Howe as he is their main goalscoring threat and is now set to miss crucial matches.

Therefore, fans will be delighted that the club are not resting on their laurels by only bringing in Wood and are prepared to improve their depth by signing another striker to compete with the Burnley man and Wilson when they are all fit later in the campaign.

However, it is down to Howe and his team to identify the right target to ensure they get a striker who can come in and produce the goods in the top-flight.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Wood: Romano drops big NUFC transfer claim that’ll infuriate Hammond…

Romano confirms AVFC interest in Kamara

Aston Villa’s new signings this January have already been making their mark on the team with Philippe Coutinho scoring a goal in his debut appearance at Villa Park last week and Lucas Digne securing an assist for the winning goal against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Now, Steven Gerrard could be set to add a third star signing to impact his squad.

What’s the word?

Transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, has teased on social media that Aston Villa could still be interested in signing Boubacar Kamara during the January transfer window.

Romano tweeted;

“Been told there’s also Boubacar Kamara in Aston Villa list.”

The Midlands outfit are not alone in their pursuit for the Marseille midfielder as he has already been linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Leeds United and Newcastle United.

Fans surely buzzing

Villa fans have already been taking to social media to respond to the glimmer of hope that Romano has given for the potential signing of Kamara, with one fan tweeting:

“B. Kamara is the dream, IMO. The perfect player for us. Hope we can get him.”

Kamara, who was hailed as “out of the ordinary” by former teammate, Rolando, has made 21 appearances and scored one goal so far for his Ligue One club from his defensive midfield position and has definitely earned the attention he is attracting when you look at his defensive attributes.

According to SofaScore, in the league this season, the 22-year-old has won the majority of both his aerial duels (54%) and his ground duels (56%), has a 94% accurate pass rate in his own half proving he is effective in developing play from a defensive position and averages at 1.2 interceptions per game.

These statistics only further show the strengths that the Frenchman can add to Villa, with clear reliability in his position and has only missed three games through injury in the last three and a half years, meaning he would not only be reliable in his ability and talent, but also in fitness, with a serious injury costing Villa in their midfield already this season when Marvelous Nakamba sustained a serious knee injury.

Gerrard will need to work fast in securing the player’s signature as he is a hot prospect in defensive midfield, especially with midfield positions being a key target that many clubs in the Premier League are looking to fill or upgrade.

Welegedara, Kandamby left out of tri-series

Sri Lanka have left out left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara and batsman Thilina Kandamby for the tri-series, which begins on August 10 in Dambulla

Cricinfo staff07-Aug-2010Sri Lanka have left out left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara, allrounder Farveez Maharoof and batsman Thilina Kandamby for the tri-series, which begins on August 10 in Dambulla. Chamara Silva, who last played in the tri-series also involving India and Zimbabwe in May and June, makes a return, as does fast bowler Dilhara Fernando. Sri Lanka have also picked allrounder Thisara Perera, who was the leading wicket-taker in the one-day games on the A tour of Australia in June and July.Muttiah Muralitharan, who recently retired from Tests, was rested, though he has made himself available for selection for the 2011 World Cup. Maharoof’s omission is surprising because the allrounder impressed in the Asia Cup, taking a hat-trick during a five-wicket haul in the league match against India.Silva, at one point, was a regular in Sri Lanka’s middle order until a series of low scores cost him his place in the Asia Cup. Fernando played in the second Test against India at the SSC, while Perera represented Sri Lanka in 10 ODIs and was also part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in the IPL. The other participating teams in the tri-series are India and New Zealand and all the matches will be held in Dambulla.Squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Mahela Jayawardene (vc), Chamara Silva, Thisara Perera, Dilhara Fernando, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Suraj Randiv, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath.

Everton could make last minute Broja bid

Everton have had a hectic January transfer window, making three signings early in the month and sacking their manager, Rafa Benitez, soon after, with all the attention firmly on the appointment of the next manager, Moshiri could be lining up a last-minute bid that could add a fourth new player to the squad.

What’s the word?

According to TEAMtalk, Everton are one of the three Premier League clubs interested in signing Armando Broja, who is currently on loan at Southampton from Chelsea.

The Toffees reportedly join Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race to sign the 20-year-old striker, with just four days left to go in the January transfer window.

The report claims that Southampton are keen to keep Broja with them at St Mary’s, but with many Premier League clubs now showing interest in the youngster, it could be a challenge for them to hold onto him.

Lukaku 2.0

Everton are no strangers to attracting young Chelsea talent, with the potential signing of Broja similar to the £28m club-record signing at the time of Romelu Lukaku back in 2014, when the Belgian goal machine was just 21 years old.

Lukaku was a huge success at Everton, scoring 87 goals and bagging 29 assists in just 166 appearances for the club, with a goal involvement every 120 minutes for the Toffees, so the club could be onto their next Chelsea swoop to potentially emulate the success of their former striker.

The £8.1m-rated monster who was hailed “dangerous” by his current manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, has been making his mark on the Southampton team with 21 appearances and seven goals, five of those have been scored in the Premier League.

However, goals aren’t the only attribute that Broja has been excelling in, according to One Versus One the youngster has been using his 6 foot2 stature to impose himself on opponents, making 170 aerial challenges this season so far, and ranking 8th in the Premier League for completing aerial duels, proving that he is not afraid to get stuck into the game away from just scoring goals.

There has been real upset and aggravation amongst fans with a protest staged last night at Goodison Park, so bringing in young players with bags of potential could be a move for Moshiri that could potentially settle the current outrage.

That’s especially if Broja could come in and make an instant impact in changing the fate of the Toffees nightmare season, and helping the side climb back into a safe position in the Premier League table.
